Position Summary

　　GEICO is seeking an experienced Engineer with a passion for building high-performance, low maintenance, zero-downtime platforms, and applications. You will help drive our insurance business transformation as we transition from a traditional IT model to a tech organization with engineering excellence as its mission, while co-creating the culture of psychological safety and continuous improvement.

　　Position Description

　　As a Principal Engineer, you will collaborate with our Distinguished and Senior Engineers to innovate and build new systems, improve, and enhance existing systems and identify new opportunities to use your skills to solve critical problems. The ideal candidate has extensive technical expertise in the Open-Source Database platform domain and with the ancillary applications used to deploy, maintain, and remediate database systems.

　　The primary focus of this position will involve architecting, deploying, and automating an enterprise-wide PostgreSQL presence at GEICO. Additional focus will be placed on building and executing data migration strategies to migrate data from existing DBMS solutions to PostgreSQL. The selected candidate will be considered a subject matter expert in PostgreSQL and must have required experience and knowledge to fulfill this role. As the PostgreSQL SME, your team and GEICO will rely heavily on your experience to provide information and decisions that will shape our PostgreSQL journey and final delivery.

　　As a Principal Engineer I, you will:Focus on multiple areas and provide technical and thought leadership to the enterpriseCollaborate with product managers, team members, customers, and other engineering teams to solve our toughest problemsDevelop and execute technical software development strategies for the Platform Engineering domainLead architectural design sessions to elevate the quality of database engineering across the organizationBe accountable for the quality, usability & performance of the solutions you implementBe a role model and mentor, helping to coach and strengthen the technical expertise and know-how of our engineering and product communityBe able to influence and educate executives regarding proposed architecture and implemented solutions as neededConsistently share best practices and improve processes within and across teamsDetermine and support resource requirements, evaluate operational processes, measure outcomes to ensure desired results, demonstrate adaptability and sponsor continuous learningTake on-call responsibilities and provide operational supportQualificationsHands-on involvement in designing and implementing PostgreSQL infrastructure from inception through production implementationExperience deploying PostgreSQL in a production enterprise environment in a traditional IaaS configuration within a containerized format managed by KubernetesAbility to design and implement database architectures and solutions that meet business requirements, performance goals, and scalability needs, while ensuring data integrity, consistency, and availability, using PostgreSQLAdvanced proficiency in PostgreSQL backup and recovery strategies, disaster recovery planning, and high availability solutionsStrong understanding of database security principles and best practices, including user authentication, authorization, encryption, and auditing, as well as compliance with industry standards and regulations, in PostgreSQL and other DBMS environmentsExtensive knowledge and experience with database administration, installation, configuration, upgrades, and maintenance, across different versions and platforms, within a large-scale, multi-platform database environmentExpertise in database tuning and performance optimization, including monitoring, troubleshooting, and resolving issues related to SQL queries, indexes, tablespaces, memory usage, and storage capacity, using PostgreSQLExperience with migrating databases from other DBMS (Oracle/SQL Server/DB2) to PostgreSQL, including understanding the differences and similarities between the database management systemsUnderstanding of other open-source databases like MySQL, MariaDB, etc.Familiarity with No-SQL databases like Cassandra, MongoDB, Elasticsearch and with NewSQL databases such as TIDB, Cockroach, or YugabyteDB will be a plusKnowledge of open-source monitoring software like Grafana and PrometheusFluent in at least one OOP languages such as Java, Python, C++, etc.Ability to code on-demand using at least one OOP languageFamiliarity with two of the following languages: C, PHP, Perl, Ruby, JavaScript, PowerShell, Linux Shell Scripting, etc.Experience in CI/CD pipeline and related open-source tools like GIT/Jenkins/CircleCI/SonarQube; knowledge in Terraform/Ansible will be a big plusKnowledge of developer tooling across the software development life cycle (task management, source code, building, deployment, test automation and related tools, operations, real-time communication, etc.)Track-record of participating in and contributing to open-source code publication a plusExperience with continuous delivery and infrastructure as codeExemplary ability to design new solutions, perform structured testing, document results and influence engineering direction and product roadmapExperience partnering with engineering teams and transferring research to productionExperience solving analytical problems with quantitative approachesAbility to excel in a fast-paced, startup-like environmentExperience6+ years of professional PostgreSQL experience4+ years of experience in open-source frameworks3+ years of experience with architecture and design3+ years of experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, or another cloud service3+ years of experience developing with an OOP language1+ years of people mentoring and team/project leadership experienceEducationBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent education or work experience#LI-RP2

　　Annual Salary

　　$82,000.00 - $204,500.00

　　The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate's work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
