About Principal Database Engineer I

  Who we are looking for

  Leading technical contributor to the enhancement and maintenance of one or more Charles River IMS modules or components of an agile scrum team. Provide engineering troubleshooting assistance to customer support teams and other development teams within Charles River.

  Why this role is important to us

  The team you will be joining is a part of Charles River Development (or CRD), that became a part of State Street in 2018. CRD helps create enterprise investment management software solutions for large institutions in the areas of institutional investment, wealth management and hedge funds. Together we have created the first open front-to-back platform - State Street Alpha that was launched in 2019.

  What you will be responsible for

  Database Design and ArchitectureDevelop and design database architecture to support Charles River applications, ensuring system scalability, security, performance and reliabilityDesign strategies for distributed database platforms, including Data Warehouse, Data Mart, Data Lake and Operational Data Storage (ODS) that support cloud architecture and microservicesCollaborate with system and software architects to set standards for operations, programming, security and deployment of the databasesData ModelingCreate and maintain comprehensive documentation of database design, data models, configurations, and processesEstablish standard processes to ensure data model consistency and accuracy across business applicationsDatabase Security and Disaster RecoveryEstablish and enforce database security best practices, including access controls, encryption, and data masking that ensure compliance with data protection regulationsCollaborate with production DBA to conduct capacity planning that address future and long-term data storage and performance requirementsDesign and develop high availability, robust disaster recovery, and data purging and backup strategiesDatabase PerformanceOptimize performance through indexing, SQL query optimization, and other database tuning techniquesMonitor database performance metrics, analyze and identify bottlenecks, and recommend short-term and long-term solutionsCollaborate with engineering teams to define performance test strategy, and develop toolsets to generate synthetic datasets for effective and repeatable performance testsCollaboration and LeadershipProvide technical guidance and support to engineering, SaaS Operation, support and Implementation teamsCollaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, SaaS Operation, support, and implementation, to ensure seamless integration of database systemsProvide technical leadership and mentorship to database engineers

  What we value

  Extensive hands-on experience in RDBMS and distributed data platforms as a database architectStrong analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to troubleshoot and resolve database related issuesProficiency in SQL and database design principlesExperience with cloud database services such as Azure SQL Database or AWS RDSExperience in NoSQL databases is preferredProgramming experience in Java, C++, C#, JDBC, Sprint boot, and Microservices is a plusExperience with developing applications for the financial markets is a plus (Fixed Income, Trading, FX, Risk, Portfolio/Wealth Management, Market Data, FIX, etc.)

  Education & Preferred Qualifications

  7 to 10+ years of experience as a Database Architect or in a similar role supporting enterprise applications backed with RDBMS databases or SnowflakeBachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field. Master's degree is a plusProven experience with major relational databases such as MS SQL Server or Oracle, hardware sizing and configuration, operating systems, scripting, and database technologiesStrong understanding of database security best practices and data protection regulationsAbility to provide technical leadership and collaborate effectively with cross functional and organizational teamsExcellent communication skills (verbal and written) with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholdersA minimum of 7 years working with an Agile development methodology strongly desired

  Salary Range:

  $110,000 - $185,000 Annual

  The range quoted above applies to the role in the primary location specified. If the candidate would ultimately work outside of the primary location above, the applicable range could differ.
