General Summary:
Unum Group seeks Principal Data Scientists in Portland, ME.
The Principal Data Scientist applies principles of economics and statistical modeling to the development, analysis and interpretation of data, develops analytical frameworks, and leads data analytics projects working with actuarial and other finance partners to help optimize business performance. Specific core duties and responsibilities include design and execution of analytics and predictive modeling solutions using linear and non-linear techniques, clustering, optimization, simulation, data/text mining and other statistical methods to understand, explain and/or predict events or trends. This role directly supports Core Actuarial and Finance Functions such as Product Pricing, Reserving, Pricing Strategy, Investment Strategy, as well as represents Finance with Enterprise Analytics initiatives. The Principal Data Scientist is responsible for leading a team of Data Scientists, Analysts and Actuaries, building out standards of practice that meet team, finance, enterprise and industry standards. The Principal Data Scientist is involved in tracking and assessing current and future regulatory guidance related to emerging development and applications of Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence and presents data driven analysis and recommendations on issues including Insurance Product Pricing, Payment Reserving, Investment Strategy, Economic Forecasting, and Anomaly Detection to peers and senior Unum leadership. This position is based at Unum's Portland, ME location with the option to telecommute within a normal commuting distance approximately 2 days per week.
Requires a Bachelor's degree in Economics, Statistics, Data Analytics, or a related field plus 4 years of experience as a Data Scientist or a related professional position. Requires 4 years of data science experience, including at least 2 years in the insurance domain, working with actuarial and other finance partners; Statistical modeling, including statistical inference and regression, machine learning, feature selection, and feature extraction; Machine Learning software (Python/R/AWS); data process automation, creating logical data models by combining data from multiple sources, complex SQL queries, including file I/O, database integrations, and APIs to build automated analytics pipelines; internal and external APIs, including object-oriented development and database integrations (cloud and local); and creating data visualizations and story telling, including static and dynamic data visualization.
40 hours/week; $136,260 - $156,260 per year. The wage range for this position supersedes the base salary range listed below, due to the salary range below reflecting a national range. The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.
$109,100.00-$213,300.00
