Post Doctoral Associate (SWANSON)GSPH-Epidemiology - Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh - (24000406)
Post Doctoral Associate - Department of Epidemiology
Dr. Sonja Swanson in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health seeks a postdoctoral associate to collaborate on efforts to improve causal inferences in observational studies. Our research group works broadly on improving and increasing the transparency of methods for causal inference in public health, especially in settings for which randomized trials are not feasible.
The researcher will work primarily on applications in suicide prevention and firearm violence prevention, joining a multidisciplinary team of collaborators spanning expertise in epidemiology, statistics, health policy, law, medicine, mental health, injury, and economics. Pending successful completion of the appropriate background checks, the researcher will join the research team for the Longitudinal Study of Handgun Ownership and Transfers (LongSHOT), a cohort study of the impact of handgun ownership on mortality risks in over 35 million individuals followed longitudinally for over 17 years. More information on the design of LongSHOT can be found here: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32492303/. The researcher will be given the opportunity to collaborate on a wide range of projects depending on their expertise and interest. Potential projects include leveraging this unique dataset to evaluate state-level firearm-related policies (e.g., extreme risk protection orders) and informing individual- and household-level decision-making about gun ownership and divestment, with particular attention to suicide prevention. Methodologically, projects are anticipated to benefit from novel approaches to partial identification, triangulation, alternative or "quasi-experimental" designs like versions of difference-in-difference, and falsification strategies like negative controls. We encourage researchers to apply if interest and expertise lie in the substantive applications, the causal inference methodology, or both.
Qualifications or Expectations:
• Ph.D. in epidemiology, biostatistics, or a related field • Demonstrated knowledge of causal inference methods • Proficiency in R and SAS is strongly preferred • Strong candidates will have a promising record and interest in at least one of the following: development of novel causal inference methodology; causal effect estimation using observational data; mental health or psychiatric epidemiology; suicide prevention; injury epidemiology; and health policy research.
Review of applications will commence upon receipt of all application materials and will continue until the position is filled. Please apply through requisition #24000406 through join.pitt.edu.
Please attach a cover letter, current CV, statement of research interests (1-2 page max) and contact information for three references to your Talent Center application.
