The role you’ll contribute:
Primary responsibility is the provision of medication distributive functions and pharmacy operational tasks, which includes but is not limited to assisting the pharmacist with all duties of preparing and dispensing of medications, inventory management, and regulatory compliance. Performs duties necessary for the effective daily operation of all department services and programs. Accurately responds to medication dispensing requests, prepares medications for pharmacist final review/check, delivers checked medications, and returns unused or expired medications to appropriate pharmacy areas. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

Actively performs all pharmacy technician functions and maintains active proficiency in standard work parameters, hospital and pharmacy specific computer systems, and operational programs
Maintains operational expertise and competency in, and actively provides coverage of at least two of the following:
Central/Distributive operations
Sterile compounding
Decentral/ Automated Dispensing Cabinet delivery pharmacy operations
Controlled substances handling
Participates in appropriate utilization of medication automation, technology, and computer systems. Maintains expertise in electronic medical records processed and accurately interprets records.
Supports automated dispensing cabinet inventory management and maintains proficiency to trouble shoot cabinet issues
Accurately completes medication inventories and accurately prepares and dispenses patient‐specific medication doses. Prevents improper drug, dose, dosage form selection, expiration dating, and barcode scanning issues when checking products
Understands how to handle process and appropriately dispose of all waste materials, including all levels of hazardous waste, within the department. Knowledgeable about the appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Hazardous Medication Spill Kits in the event of a hazardous medication spill.
Prescription processing: follow a systematic procedure for assisting with the flow of prescriptions through the pharmacy. Fill in patient information on all prescriptions. Obtain insurance information from patient and keep patient abreast of any insurance problems. Maintain current patient information in computer. Assure that patient has signed HIPAA release. Keep pharmacist aware of patient status and need for prescription check. Assure orders are processed, dispensed and delivered accurately and promptly. Always obtain pharmacists’ verification before distribution of any medication.
Prescription preparation: follows strict guidelines in preparing and dispensing medications under the immediate supervision of the pharmacist. Assist the pharmacist with all duties of preparing and dispensing of medication accurately and efficiently. Prepare various compounds using aseptic technique under the immediate supervision of the pharmacist. Prepare and label prescriptions for the pharmacist before dispensing. Obtain controlled substances for prescription filling under the immediate supervision of pharmacist. Double-count schedule II-controlled substances before dispensing. Place all dispensing materials for pharmacist final verification (i.e. stock container, original prescription(s), labeling, etc.). Demonstrate knowledge of the generic names of medications, medication uses, and a good understanding of mathematical principles.
Communication: communicate with patients and other pharmacies regarding prescription transfers or clarification. Answer phone calls and determine nature of request. Respond to requests to determine if there are refills. Respond to needs of patients, physicians, and other healthcare practitioners regarding status of prescriptions and deliveries.
Inventory management: maintain adequate current stock of medications. Maintain accuracy in inventory control including, but not limited to computer. Coordinate receiving, record keeping, stocking drugs and checking for shorts, discrepancies and outdated merchandise. Monitor inventory system to insure proper storage conditions for all pharmacy items. Check products for expiration date at least every month and before dispensing. Call hospital pharmacy to obtain needed drugs/supplies as requested by pharmacist. Respond to needs of patient, physician, nursing stations, and/or community pharmacists regarding special order or borrowing needs as requested by pharmacist. Adjust inventory stock levels and orders drugs in appropriate amount to replenish stock. Never run out of fast movers (top 50). Assure medications not ordered through EDI are entered into inventory.
Expense management: perform all activities involved in the management of pharmaceutical expenses by reviewing and comparing generic costs. Seek additional vendors for hard to obtain pharmaceuticals whenever necessary. Identify changes in drug movement patterns to Manager or Pharmacy Director as needed to address issues that may impact pharmacy budget.
Qualifications
The expertise and experiences you'll need to succeed:
Required:
Must be registered with The Florida Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy InternPreferred:
High School graduate or G.E.D. certification.
Retail Pharmacy experience, at least 2-3 years
Experience with obtaining payment of prescriptions from insurance companies
Technician certification (PTCB) or ability to obtain within two years
Competent in medical terminology, medication names and medication use
Proficient with prescription-filling software and other computer skill
