Part-Time Voter Guide Editor
The USA TODAY NETWORK 2024 Elections Team is hiring a part-time editor to oversee the most ambitious voter guide initiative in company history. Our voter guides will span the presidential election and key statewide races in all 50 states and Washington DC, along with local voter guides in more than 100 communities. We are looking for an incredibly detail-oriented editor to help us execute this initiative for USA TODAY and our network of more than 200 local papers.
The USA TODAY Network election team creates news, information, tools, guides, and forums that empower voters to make informed choices on issues and races that will set America's direction for the coming years. The voter guide initiative is critical to our mission.
The ideal candidate has experience in editorial project management across a matrixed organization. They should be a master of spreadsheets, collaboration, and communication.
This part-time hourly role runs from Jan. 2, 2024, to Nov. 8, 2024, and will pay $45.00 per hour. The number of hours will vary per week, but we anticipate this role will require around 10-20 hours per week on average. The start date can be flexible for the right candidate. This is a remote position, and you can be based in any state except for Alaska and Hawaii.
The Voter Guide Editor will report to Gannett's Managing Editor for the 2024 Election.
Responsibilities: Collaborate with 100+ editors throughout the company to determine which races and ballot initiatives will display on which voter guides. Create and maintain a process to assign, collect, and review all text on deadline. Review all submitted elements, such as candidate bios and referendum explainers, to ensure our guides are delivering audience-focused reporting. Filter questions and support local editors with workflow in the voter guide process. Keep track of updates necessary as the cycle shifts from primaries to the general election. Have an eagle eye to ensure consistency across the many versions of our guides. Requirements: Proven experience managing complex projects, ideally for a digital news company. Proven editing experience, ideally in news or politics. Keen understanding of AP Style and an eye for consistency. A passion for people-centered and service-driven election journalism. Agility at managing multiple projects and leading through action and collaboration. Can manage your own time wisely, as well as guiding others on making deadline. First-rate communication skills with the ability to ensure the right stakeholders are consulted and informed. Upholds Gannett's standards of journalistic rigor, accuracy, and fairness.
