BLACK BEAR technicians (2) are needed from April 29 to August 15 to build and monitor barbed wire hair corrals in north Florida (in and near the Osceola National Forest). We are seeking self-sufficient and detail-oriented technicians to assist with a black bear abundance study. Corrals will be built as a team, but technicians will check them independently once per week for 6 weeks then remove them. Technicians will also participate in data entry/management. Applicants must be dependable, able to accurately enter field data onto paper and a cloud-based database and manage hair samples with minimal supervision. Long hours (10+ hours/day) and occasional work on weekends or holidays may be required; any work over 40 hours in a pay week will be compensated at 1.5 times hourly rate. Free housing will be provided, and Applicants must be comfortable living in shared quarters with members of the opposite sex.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Able to work in remote areas under adverse field conditions such as harsh weather conditions (hot temperatures, high humidity, heavy rain, and lightning), biting insects, and poisonous plants.
Skilled in building and maintaining barbed wire hair corrals, navigating unimproved roads and off-trail by handheld GPS/phone apps (e.g. FieldMaps, On-X, etc.).
Skilled at entering data into Excel or a cellphone-based cloud database, accurately checking data to correct errors, and appropriately storing physical samples of bear hair.
Skilled at driving 4WD trucks and atvs.
Excellent interpersonal skills and able to interact professionally with private landowners, state and federal agency personnel, and remote supervisor.
Must have their own transportation for personal time.
Able to lift and carry 30 lbs.
Minimum Qualifications:
Two years of post-high school experience in wildlife, fisheries, environmental, ecological or related agriculture or construction or an associate of science degree from an accredited college in the field of wildlife, fisheries, environmental, ecological or agriculture studies.
A valid U.S. driver’s license, clean driving record, and authorization to work in the U.S. are required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Applicants should have a BS in wildlife or related field. Preferred applicants will have previous field experience working independently, driving a 4WD truck on unmanaged wet and/or flooded roads/trails, operating and loading ATVs into a truck bed or trailer, and be detail-oriented and thorough with data collection. Prior experience maintaining hair corrals and entering data into a cloud-based database are especially preferred.
This position requires the candidate to have successful completion of a level 1 background check at no cost to the candidate prior to hire.
