Department of Recreation, Sport and Tourism
Position
The Department of Recreation, Sport and Tourism (RST) at the Universityof Illinois Urbana-Champaign invites applications for an open-rank,nine-month tenure-track faculty position in Recreation, Sport andTourism related to health technology and/or artificial intelligence (AI)and health.
We seek candidates with an interdisciplinary research agenda inrecreation, sport and/or tourism that addresses technology to promotehealth and well-being. Examples of research areas that align with thisposition include (but are not limited to): adoption of technologies,adaptive technologies, spatial analytics/geographic analysis, big datamethods, especially those using (AI), and other AI and healthtechnologies for health in the contexts of recreation, sport andtourism.
UIUC is hiring a cluster of faculty in the broadly themed area AI forCommunity Health to promote and support health and well-being. Thecandidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with other facultymembers hired as part of the cluster. The cluster will be supported bymultiple research centers which will provide resources and support todevelop this important research area. Participating centers include theHealth Care Engineering Systems Center (HCESC) in the Grainger Collegeof Engineering, the Center on Aging, Health, and Disability (CHAD) inthe College of Applied Health Sciences, the National Center forSupercomputing Applications (NCSA), and the Cline Center for AdvancedSocial Research, among others.
This position also builds on the Department\'s interdisciplinarystrengths in health and well-being, which is a pillar of engagementwithin the Department. The other three departmental pillars ofengagement are organizational and community development; sustainablechange; and diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
The start date for this position will be August 16, 2024.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include collaborating with other faculty in the healthtechnology and AI cluster, conducting research in health technologyrelated to contexts of recreation, sport and tourism; buildingcollaborative research partnerships with colleagues within theDepartment, College and various disciplines across campus; advising anddirecting student research including theses and dissertations;instructing undergraduate and graduate courses; contributing to theDepartment\'s curriculum; seeking and securing external funding forresearch; serving on Department, College, and University committees;engaging in professional and public service activities; and working toestablish a welcoming and supportive culture that embraces diverseindividual identities, fosters a culture of inclusion, and promotesequity in curricula, teaching, standards, behaviors, policies andpractices.
Qualification
Applicants must demonstrate the following minimum qualifications:
- Earned doctorate in recreation, sport and/or tourism or relatedfields at the time of appointment.
- Evidence of a strong publication record in top-tier peer-reviewedscholarly journals.
- Evidence of the ability to secure or potential for securing externalresearch funding.
- Evidence of commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses within the RSTDepartment.
- Ability to mentor doctoral and master\'s students.
- Ability to contribute to the university and the recreation, sport andtourism field through academic and public service/engagement.
The Department
Faculty and staff of the Department of Recreation, Sport and Tourism (RST) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign work to advanceknowledge to foster healthy lifestyles, environmental stewardship andsustainability, effective management and marketing of organizations, andsocial and economic development of communities (see www.rst.illinois.edufor additional information). The Department offers residential B.S.,M.S., and Ph.D. programs, an online M.S. program, and houses the Officeof Park and Recreation Resources.
