With this in mind, the scientist, new product development will play a critical role driving the development of new beverage platforms for wine, spirits, beer and emerging beverage categories. Reporting to the Director, Head of US New product development, the NPD scientist will play a critical role in supporting Constellation's innovation agenda by creating & managing all technical aspects of new product development projects from concept to launch including prototype development, direct formulation trials, supplier relationship management, stability testing, regulatory reviews, and partnership with cross functional teams through the scale up process. This role is part of our broader innovation organization which is made up of innovation focused teams of marketers, developers, insights experts, and project managers. With this in mind, we are looking for someone who is passionate about beverage science and excited about the process of contributing to Constellation's future business by creating products that consumers will love.
Ideal Profile: Hands-on scientist with a background is Wine & Spirits or any kind of beverage is highly preferable.
Core Product Development Activities
• Lead the formulation, prototype development, shelf-life testing, and transition for scale up of new products in the area of, but not limited to, flavored wines + spirits, beer, hard seltzers, RTD cocktails, and other emerging beverage alcohol categories
• Build & maintain an ingredient (spirits/juices) & flavor library working with vendors to aid rapid prototyping; Build a portfolio of vendors in each category above
• Interact with Winemaking, Distillers, Innovation and Emerging Categories to determine the appropriate base material(s) to use for prototype products based on project specifications, availability and tax savings opportunities (spirits)
• Collaborate with sensory studies to develop shelf-life protocols, plan & establish shelf life
• Coordinate pkg corrosion testing, and nutritional's to prepare finished product specs
• Actively participate in consumer research plans for products; Working knowledge of sensory methodologies and interpretation of results desired
• Collaborate with Marketing and innovation teams to refine product brief
• Establish & verify new product design and specifications for new products upon execution in respective manufacturing plant(s)
• Work in close collaboration with other R&D sites to learn & share knowledge/best practices
• Network with internal/external stakeholders for enhanced ingredients, technologies & training
• Troubleshoot product/process problems as required in the laboratory during product development process and winery scale-up
• Support NPD R&D laboratory upkeep and maintenance
• Serve as product development lead in cross functional project team meetings.
Regulatory Activities
• Strong knowledge of natural, organic and certifications desired
• Lab bench work and pilot plant work as needed
• Maintain accurate, up to date records, hardwired or digital lab notebooks
• Working knowledge of alcohol regulations for new innovation initiatives
• Collaborate upfront with regulatory/legal departments to ensure compliance and vet product development timeline and testing/sourcing options
• Support product formula filings with TTB and develop accurate FDA labels as applicable
• Track budget on own projects & company issued P-card tracking and reporting for lab spend
Requirements
• M.S degree in Food Science desired (or Bachelors w/significant experience)
• 3+ years in product development for the consumer product or flavor industry
• Curious & passionate about the world of food and beverage product development
• Stay solution focused while maintaining an innovators mindset asking 'why not' and 'what would it take'? while driving technical rigor within teams
• Strong word processing, spreadsheet, database management abilities
• Self-starter, multitasker and a learning mindset
• Good communication skills, both verbal and written to non-technical audience • Goal oriented individual with track record of executional excellence
• Motivated & collaborative problem solver with a record of delivering results in a matrix org
• Previous appreciated experience: Beverage, flavors or related products
Physical requirements
• Ability to sit for long periods of time when performing administrative duties
• Ability to stand for long periods of time when performing product development duties
• Ability to lift 50 pounds
• Corporate travel up to 25% of the time

The salary range for this role is:
$90,100.00 - $138,100.00
This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range, and the range may be modified in the future. An employee's pay position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but limited to, the prevailing minimum wage for the location, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, shift, travel requirements, sales or revenue-based metrics, any collective bargaining agreements, and business or organizational needs.
