Definition
Under direction, is responsible for developing and overseeing programs related to adventure recreation or environmental education; performs related duties as required.
Examples of Work

Plans, organizes, coordinates, schedules, directs, conducts, and evaluates adventure recreation or environmental education programs, classes, activities and/or special events;
Conducts training sessions, clinics, and workshops in outdoor living, adventure based skills, aquatic sports, and various environmental and natural resource topics;
Promotes programs, activities and special events by preparing, posting and/or distributing flyers and posters and writing newsletter and newspaper articles and press releases; prepares exhibits and bulletin boards to promote the features of the facility;
Issues and maintains the inventory of program equipment, materials, and supplies;
Directs the maintenance and care of assigned equipment and instructs subordinates in the proper use of such equipment; arranges for transporting equipment and supplies; oversees adventure-based equipment such as high ropes courses and climbing walls;
Attends seminars, workshops, training sessions and conferences to maintain certifications and develop new skills to enhance program services;
Instructs program participants, orally and by demonstration, in the techniques of various environmental and adventure recreation activities and use of equipment; explains and demonstrates safety procedures and techniques;
Works with local teachers and educators to develop various school projects, training programs, and partnership opportunities;
Designs, develops, and implements day, overnight, and weekend camping programs; oversees and monitors camp operations and facilities;
Plans, promotes, and conducts informative and educational tours and nature walks of City parks, gardens, and nature preserves; answers visitors questions;
Maintains records and prepares reports; may prepare grant, financial, tax inventory or insurance reports;
Supervises subordinate recreation personnel by making work assignments and schedules; monitoring and reviewing work performed; guiding and motivating subordinates; providing counseling, training and/or orientation when needed; and evaluating subordinate performance in writing;
Coordinates fundraising events; solicits donations; writes and reviews grant proposals;
Provides first aid treatment to visitors and program participants injured on premises and assists persons with more serious injuries to obtain appropriate medical care;
Inspects facilities and equipment prior to and after use to ensure adequate and safe conditions in accordance with national safety standards;
May investigate complaints directed toward programs, facility and or personnel, and attempt to resolve problems.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of experience in outdoor or adventure recreation leadership or environmental/natural resources education. Substitution(s): Two (2) years of additional experience in environmental education or adventure recreation or a closely related area may substitute for two (2) years of the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Possession of a valid driver’s license.
Possession of a valid First Aid and CPR certification within six (6) months of appointment.
Possession of a valid American Red Cross Lifeguard certification or ACA Canoe Instructor certification within six (6) months of appointment for positions assigned to water related activities or programs.
