  Description of Work Unit

  The Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands ( CEMML ) is a research, education, and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State Univerity ( CSU ). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and other CSU departments to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

  Position Summary

  A Natural Resources Specialist position is available with CSU CEMML and will be located at Joint Base Lewis-McChord ( JBLM ), Washington. JBLM is located 9.1 miles south-southwest of Tacoma, Washington. JBLM is a training and mobilization center for all services and is the only Army power projection base west of the Rocky Mountains. The facility is under the U.S. Army Joint Base Garrison, and includes the U.S. Army’s Fort Lewis and the U.S. Air Force’s McChord Air Force Base. JBLM is 90,000 acres with one of the largest remaining intact forest areas in the Puget Sound basin.

  The Specialist will provide technical expertise and field support to natural resource project planning and implementation, data collection, wildlife surveys, habitat improvement, and invasive species management. Work will include Migratory Bird Treaty Act ( MBTA ) compliance surveys in proposed timber sale areas, fire-line preparation, oak and pine plantings and maintenance, and other work that promotes the recovery/restoration of disturbed areas, including Rx fire program support.

  Specific tasks include, but not limited to:

  • Walking up to 8 miles per day in off-trail, rugged terrain through dense forested areas

  • Using herbicide to treat invasive species

  • Routine maintenance of handheld equipment (chainsaws, brush-cutters, augers, etc.)

  • Loading/towing/operating heavy equipment (tractor, UTV )

  • Leading teams of volunteers in field work

  • Driving 4×4 vehicles on unpaved, non-maintained roads

  • Spending extended periods of time outdoors in inclement weather

  Required Job Qualifications

  Bachelor’s degree in an environmental, natural resources, or relevant field.

  Able to do simple equipment maintenance (cleaning, checking fluids, etc.).

  Knowledge and familiarity with Pacific Northwest lowland plants, habitats, and restoration management techniques.

  Able to walk long distances and work outdoors in adverse weather on rugged terrain.

  Ability to navigate in unfamiliar areas using a compass and GPS app such as field maps or Avenza.

  Must be able to follow directions, be comfortable working independently and working collectively with others as a team and maintain safe working standards.

  Able to execute protocols for animal and plant surveys, invasive species control, restoration projects, mapping projects, etc.

  The successful candidate must be authorized to work in the United States by proposed start date. CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

  Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date. A valid driver’s license must be maintained for continued employment.

  Preferred Job Qualifications

  Experience working on military installations or in a hierarchical organization.

  Experience conducting surveys and data collection using apps such as Field Maps, Survey123, and Quick Capture.

  Current National Wildfire Coordinating Group ( NWCG ) Fire Fighter Type 2 certification, or ability to obtain, including completing the work capacity test at arduous level.

  Experience operating/maintaining field equipment (tractor, 4×4, chainsaw, etc.).

  Experience leading small field crews.

  Attention to details and ability to notice small changes in habitat (eg. nests, canopy structure)

  Current WSDA pesticide license or ability to obtain.

  Knowledge and familiarity with identifying raptors and their nests/habitats.

  Support conservation and restoration efforts for the Natural Resources program at JBLM by:

  • Conducting ecological compliance surveys in proposed timber sale areas

  • Oak woodland restoration (shrub and brush removal, tree thinning and planting, prescribed fire prep, etc.)

  • Survey and manage invasive and noxious weeds

  • Conduct various wildlife and habitat surveys

  • Provide assistance in forestry projects

  • Support prescribed burning objectives

  • Lead teams of volunteers when needed to accomplish tasks
