Description: Medical Technologist, Microbiology
Summary: The main function of the technician/technologist is to perform routine medical laboratory tests for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease.
Job Responsibilities: Set up, adjust, maintain and clean medical laboratory equipment. Analyze the results of tests and experiments to ensure conformity to specifications, using special mechanical and electrical devices. Analyze, gather and record test data to issue reports that use charts, graphs and narratives. Obtain specimens, cultivating, isolating and identifying microorganisms for analysis. May examine cells stained with dye to locate abnormalities. Consult with a pathologist to determine a final diagnosis when abnormal cells are found. Primary tests include, Culturing, Gram stains, Biochemical testing.
For the microbiology lab specifically they will need to at a minimum to read gram stains which will be an interactive portion of the interview. They will be asked to review a stain under a microscope and verify what they are looking at to properly identify the specimen. Any additional micro bench testing will be a plus as they can tach most of the rapid diagnostics testing.
The micro lab involves more critical thinking then most as the cultures and gram stains they are observing vary and determining abnormalities is extremely important.
Additional testing may include:
Gram stains
ELISA
Preparation of bacterial smears
Aseptic technique.
Handling microorganism
Hours: M- F 630a-3p
Rotating every other weekend
ASCP is required
Additional Skills & Qualifications:
Must Have:
Bachelors degree in the sciences, ideally Medical Technology or Medical Lab Sciences (Will look at others with the right experience)
2-5 Years of experience as a MICROBIOLOGY Medical Technologist in a hospital lab
ASCP Certified
Nice to have:
Experience working an off shift
First Day: Shadowing and training on the lab software and SOP's
Metrics: How fast and accurate they can get the tests complete
