What Your Job Will Be Like:
The W87-1 Telemetry (TM) team is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our team! There are two products within this team, which are the Joint Test Assembly 10 (JTA10) TM and the Environmental Flight Test Unit (EFTU) TM. As a Mechanical Engineer, you will be part of a team responsible for the design, test, and verification of the mechanical aspects of the telemetry design, as well as support fixture development, procedural documentation, and fabrication efforts. The work includes designing hardware, planning/ executing tests, and analysis/ documentation for acceptance and qualification. Telemetry units are highly integrated electro-mechanical designs that must function through severe environments. The ability to work with a multi-functional engineering team is essential to success.
A successful candidate would have skills and experience with the following:
Strong design skills in CAD (CREO preferred)
Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) knowledge
Experience designing for multiple manufacturing processes including machined aluminum, sheet metal and 3D printing (FDM)
Mechanical Testing (Shock, Vibration, Temperature, Pressure, Humidity) and Data Analysis
Demonstrated strong documentation related to product development within a quality management system
Mentorship and Leadership ability
Strong, methodical approach to problem-solving
On any given day, you may:
Team with stakeholders to understand and document system needs and requirements for Telemetry HW
Work with a cross-functional team to set long-term visions and short-term priorities for the mechanical engineering team
Use critical thinking to troubleshoot both mechanical and electromechanical issues with the product and help provide solutions within programmatic constraints
Perform hands-on work with the Telemetry product through fabrication and testing activities
Use CREO and PDMLink to design, model, and lead the Telemetry product
Perform and analyze FEA simulations for stress, strain, modal and thermal environments
Work with vendors and Sandia buyers to procure development parts
Work with MCAD and the product definition team to create and authorize product drawings
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Qualifications We Require:
Bachelor’s degree in relevant engineering field plus five years of relevant experience or equivalent; OR Master's degree in relevant engineering field plus three years of relevant experience
Ability to travel for business up to 25% time
Ability to obtain and maintain DOE Q-Level Security Clearance
Demonstrated experience with Creo, Solidworks, or similar MCAD design tool
Demonstrated experience developing or executing procedures associated with high value hardware (flight, customer deliverable, production)
Ability to work on-site up to 100% of the time at the Livermore, CA facility
Qualifications We Desire:
Demonstrated breadth of knowledge in Mechanical Engineering and other engineering fields through school projects or work experience
Demonstrated experience drafting drawings using GD&T per ANSI Y14.5.
Experience in roles that required leadership and/or mentorship
Demonstrated experience working with and across a broad range of stakeholders
Active DOE Q-Level Security Clearance or other transferable U.S. Government Clearance
Understanding of nuclear weapons and Joint Test Assembly design principles
Demonstrated experience designing, testing, or fabricating aerospace hardware
Demonstrated experience with testing in the following fields or similar: vibration, shock, thermal, vacuum, centrifuge
Demonstrated experience developing test plans for validation or verification of requirement sets
About Our Team:
Sandia California's Telemetry Departments develop and maintain telemetry systems in support of the nuclear deterrence surveillance mission. Telemetry systems has responsibility for all aspects of telemetry development, including conceptual design, prototype development and testing, and transitioning production work to DOE production agencies. Telemetry systems integrate precision sensor electronics and signal conditioning with RF communication systems to support flight testing of Joint Test Assemblies. Work is performed by teams of electrical engineers and mechanical engineers, in partnership with quality engineering, reliability engineering, and project management. Current development mission assignments include the W88 ALT370 JTA8 project, the W78 JTA6R project, and the W76 JTA3 project, W80-4 JTA, W87-0 JTA4, among others.
