MARKETING DIRECTOR, AVALON TRAVEL
Reports to VP, Publisher
Location: Oakland, CA
Avalon Travel, the publisher of Rick Steves and Moon Travel Guides, is hiring a Marketing Director who recognizes the importance of brand marketing and the value of book publishing.
We are seeking an experienced leader to head our small, collaborative marketing and publicity team. Our ideal candidate is a creative problem solver and strategic thinker who can develop, supervise, and analyze book trade and consumer-facing brand marketing programs. We are headquartered in Oakland, CA and work on a hybrid schedule with Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the office. With some team members working remotely across time zones, good communication habits are key.
THE PERSON IN THIS POSITION WILL:
Provide the marketing vision and input for each phase of the publishing process including title acquisitions, product development, design, brand positioning, competition analysis, and book trade promotion. Supervise Avalon’s marketing and publicity team. Work closely with the Publisher to develop the marketing department’s annual strategic plans and goals related to lead titles, author relationships, sales channels, and initiatives to drive the business forward. Manage annual imprint marketing and publicity budget and calendar encompassing title campaigns, advertising, events, and brand promotion. Develop and supervise organic and paid brand marketing strategy for consumer-facing digital brand platforms, including title metadata at online retailers. Partner with Publisher to determine trade sales strategy, present titles to sales team, follow up on rep feedback, and manage production of sales material such as fact sheets, sell sheets, recommended title sorts and more. Liaise with external and internal partners, including Hachette corporate teams and key authors. Potentially travel to represent Avalon at conferences, events, and meetings.
SKILLS OR KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED TO SUCCEED IN THIS ROLE:
Experience working in consumer-facing marketing, advertising, or publicity, ideally in book marketing. Candidates should have at least seven years of relevant experience and the ability to work creatively with smaller budgets. Experience managing staff and budgets, preferably supervising more than one direct report simultaneously. Interest in non-fiction/reference book publishing is essential but having a degree or being well-traveled is not! Strong writing skills, verbal presentation skills, and communication habits. An aptitude for experimentation, comfort assessing data and willingness to adjust or reassess based on results. Social media fluency and etiquette. HELPFUL BUT NOT REQUIRED:
Knowledge of Amazon ads, Meta ads, Canva, Wordpress, Braze, Google Analytics, Pinterest Understanding of title metadata optimization strategies Interest in representing Moon on camera in video content and possibly at virtual or in-person conferences and events Prior publishing experience
We strongly encourage people from underrepresented or unconventional backgrounds, and/or those historically excluded from publishing to apply. If you are self-taught or not certain that you’re 100% qualified, please consider applying regardless. We whole-heartedly believe skills are transferable and software can be taught! As a trans- and enby-inclusive team, we also encourage candidates to use their chosen name and pronouns if comfortable doing so.
How to Apply
To be considered, please submit both a resume AND a cover letter. We ask for a cover letter so that we can understand how your skills or experience can apply to our space in travel reference publishing.
