The Role:
Newshub's specialist Māori Affairs Correspondent will play a key role in providing stories of importance to Māori communities and to broader populations in Aotearoa.
The Māori Affairs Correspondent will use their strong contacts with mana whenua and key newsmakers to find, gather and deliver stories to digital, social, and broadcast channels - to ensure issues important to Māori are prominent in our news coverage and Māori perspectives are being represented. We will also expect our Māori Affairs reporter to ensure te tirohanga Māori - a Māori lens - is placed on any coverage of significant mainstream stories - and not just to stories of Māori interest.
Key Responsibilities:
Find, gather and deliver stories Māori Affairs stories for all Newshub platforms, including Newshub Live at 6pm.Build and maintain relationships with mana whenua across New ZealandEnsure significant events in Māoridom are in Newshub's news diary and assist in the development of coverage plans for such events for all Newshub programmes and platforms.Conduct interviews in te reo - where appropriate
Ensure translations of te reo are accurateDeliver compelling original news stories either in video, copy and/or audio formats for distribution on all platforms - with primary consumption by the audience through digital and social mediaAssist other reporters to understand tikanga and a Māori perspective when their stories involve Māori issues.Engage with iwi and hapu to understand their needsFoster and nurture relationships with other Māori journalists and news organisations and be a champion of Māori journalism in Aotearoa's media industryScript and deliver news stories to a high standard, accessing the knowledge base of Newshub producers and managers to constantly improve your storiesReport live from the field to a high broadcasting standardReport breaking news in an authoritative, warm and convincing mannerHave regular conversations with Newhub producers to develop story anglesParticipate in feedback sessions to improve on-air performance
Qualities Required:
Strong contacts with mana whenua Ability to speak and translate te reo Strong understanding of Tikanga Māori An enthusiastic and positive team player who loves news An outgoing and immersive individual, passionate about the region they serve Willing to take direction and eager to develop technical and presentation skills A generous team member who appreciates individual and business successes Flexibility to work when news breaks Ability to work to tight deadlines and perform effectively under pressureClose attention to detail Excellent writing skills Basic experience with video editing Effective communicator both internally and externally A generator of original ideas Engagement with digital news platforms , and social networks Continually seeks opportunities to improve programme content and delivery Maintains excellent collaborative and professional relationships within the wider company
