Position Summary
As a Manager, Research Chemistry your focus will be grape and wine chemistry, applying strategies to improve grape growing and winemaking processes. This position is based in our Technical Services group and supports our research projects and experiments to ensure consumer-driven wine quality from vineyard to shelf. Experienced hands-on Analytical Chemist in working with volatile and non-volatile compounds, pesticides, and metals research in areas of Winegrowing, Winemaking, and process technology.
Responsibilities
Manage the execution of all analytical testing supporting ongoing product development using well-established analytical methods, including ongoing product and process optimization studies for our lead products, data analysis and reporting to Winegrowers, Winemaking, and QC teams.Develop analytical methodologies for relevant wine components and continuously improve these through research and technology.Develop and transfer new analytical methods and perform one-off special investigations and projects - investigate and resolve aberrant or unusual results.Ability to maintain, diagnose and troubleshoot various analytical instruments and their corresponding software components. Write/approve procedures (SOPs) for new analytical methods and assure lab proficiency among laboratories and analysts - mentor junior team members. Work cross-functionally with Sensory and Winemaking production partners on innovative projects of major interest to the wine industry - explaining the linkage between grape and wine chemical composition.Cultivate our core expertise in Analytical Chemistry and maintain current knowledge in peer-reviewed journals and across academic networks.Ensure compliance with government rules and regulations (FDA, OSHA, etc.)
Ability to communicate effectively between technical counterparts in all operations, write reports and make data presentations as needed. Ability to articulate the business value of technical information.Oversee the systems and programming that assure the integrity of research laboratory results - to include analyst proficiency and laboratory certification/accreditation where appropriate.Serve as a technical resource for chemistry requirements of the CompanySpecial projects and other responsibilities as assigned.Ability to function alone or in a team laboratory environment and make contributions beyond specific job function. Maintain a clean and organized work area. Individual must be self-starting and highly motivated to achieve the responsibilities described herein.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's Degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, or equivalent discipline4+ years in Analytical Chemistry with proven success calibrating, operating, trouble shooting and maintaining analytical instruments, such as Gas/Liquid Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometry systems, spectrometers, photometers, calorimeters, etc.Knowledge of analytical procedures and equipmentStrong attention to detailAbility to follow verbal and written instructions/directionsAbility to prioritize and multi-taskMust be able to recognize potential problems that require solutions to be found at a higher levelStrong communication and documentation skillsSkilled in the use of MS Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint at an intermediate level.Strong interpersonal skillsAble to work a flexible schedule with overtime as requested, including weekends and off shifts.
Preferred Qualifications
Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Fermentation Science, Food ScienceSpecific experience in chemical analysis of sensory components in wine and grapesExperience in analysis and method development of HPLC, GC-MS, & GC-MS/MS analytical methods.Statistical analysis of dataPrevious winery experience and knowledge of various wine types

The lab presents a unique environment that requires performing tasks of a repetitious nature, the ability to change job priorities and the need for speed, accuracy and precision to ensure the highest quality standards.Works outdoors/indoors.Works in warm/cold climates.Works in high places.Works on wet surfaces.Is exposed to loud noise, fumes and/or toxic chemicals.Works near moving, mechanical parts and lift truck traffic.Must be able to move up to 55lbs.Primary office environment may be warehouse/distribution setting.Must be at least 21 years of age.Must be able to sit and/or stand for long periods of time and work on a computer for extended periods. The salary range for this role is:
$105,800.00 - $165,500.00
This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range, and the range may be modified in the future. An employee's pay position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but limited to, the prevailing minimum wage for the location, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, shift, travel requirements, sales or revenue-based metrics, any collective bargaining agreements, and business or organizational needs.
