Job Overview
The Data & Devices (D&D) Business Unit is looking for a Manager, R&D Product Development Engineering (PDE) to design and develop socket, high speed connector and cable assembly solutions which are used inside of switches, servers and storage for data communication.
In this role you will beresponsible for the design and documentation of new products, from market definition through production and release. Interaction with customers, vendors, marketing, sales personnel, and other engineering areas during the pre-production stages of new products is also an important part of this role. On the management side, you will leverage your leadership experience to helpthe business in building out their new engineering hub in the Philippines where you will play a role in interviewing local talent, driving employee engagement, launching engineering processes, and supporting site initiatives as this hub grows.
Engineering Responsibilities:
Responsible for product development of socket, high-speed connector, and cable assembly solutions from market definition through production and release:
Work closely with the customer and TE sales/SA/FAE/PM in getting the right and clear VOC (voice of customer) and convert to a TE design conceptualization and preliminary product specification.
Conceive concepts and perform feasibility studies.
Run mechanical and thermal simulations.
Make the engineering evaluation/proposal to the customer.
Create the detailed design including 2D/3D drawings and perform DFMEA/tolerance analysis.
Build prototype samples and perform validation.
Complete product qualification and finalize product specification.
Provide technical support to the Operations team including Quality and Production for efficiency improvement and safe launch.
Resolve product related issues to closure and manage the ECN/PCN (Engineering Change Notification/ Product Change Notification).
Build a deep understanding of the market and customer needs by fostering a connection between the business engineering teams and the customer engineering teams
Maintain a system level understanding of the customer application and the product design/concept necessary for providing a solution to the customers’ expectation.
Follow the LEANPD Project Process to support the project team from the product development engineering (PDE) perspective to complete the new product development project on time, quality and budget. Drive the development and release of product, scale-up through stage-gate reviews, ensuring milestone commitments are maintained.
Provide technical support to customer, sales, PM and plant teams. Conduct necessary DFMEA, tests, engineering analysis, trouble shooting and verification.
Work with global manufacturing resources, procurement, and outside suppliers to meet all TE technical, quality, and cost objectives.
Execute technical documentation to fully detail design drawings and requirements, engineering and product change notices, and design history files.
Management Responsibilities:
This role will not have direct reports initially, but will play a key role in supporting the onsite leader (who will be on an expat assignment from a country outside the Philippines) in building out this new engineering hub for the D&D BU as follows:
Interview local talent for open positions that will span multiple product areas and engineering disciplines.
Provide insight into the local talent market that will help TE’s talent attraction team in locating qualified talent locally.
Facilitate the onsite leader to set up the engineering system and launch the LEANPD process.
Support the onsite leader to coordinate with MPDE/Operation teams in project execution.
Assist the onsite leader in establishing a site culture for this new engineering hub that aligns with TE’s values as well as local practices/customs.
Drive employee engagement by being a confidant to the engineering employees located in this new hub to understand how they are feeling and making recommendations to engineering leadership to maintain /improve employee engagement and wellbeing.
Required Skills/Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Master’s degree a plus.
8+ years of relevant work experience (socket / connector design or manufacturing engineering experience preferred).
5+ years of experience leading employees in the Philippines with proven experience hiring local engineering talent and driving high employee engagement.
Knowledge in socket / connector, or relevant mechanic design and development, including but not limited to, material selection, tolerance analysis, DFMEA, product qualification, etc.
Demonstrated proficiency in 3D Design Applications, ProE or SpaceClaim preferred, ANSYS simulation a plus.
Basic knowledge in raw material, industry standard, and product application.
Basic knowledge in manufacturing process (machining, molding, stamping, plating, assembly, etc.)
Basic knowledge of transmission line/signal integrity concepts is helpful in completing required tasks.
Familiarity of switch, server equipment is preferred.
Thermal management experience in high-speed signal transmission is a plus.
Familiarity with quality tools (FMEA, 6sigma, DOE, 8D, etc.).
Fluent in English (both verbal and written) to facilitate global communication both internally and with external customers.
Ability to work in a global environment – able to accommodate varying time zones and capable of collaborating with individuals across geographies.
Solid presentation skills with an ability to clearly communicate technical concepts to diverse audiences in English.
Strong organizational and time management skills with an ability to manage and execute multiple tasks/deadlines/projects simultaneously with limited direction.
Skilled problem solver – able to use data analytics and critical thinking to reach logical conclusions.
Proficient using MS office software (Word, Excel, PPT, Outlook, MS Teams, etc.).
