The Quality Systems Manager (QSM or QM) is responsible for quality, environmental, health, and food-safety programs within the plant to ensure production of a high-quality product to meet customer needs. The QSM facilitates the maintenance and continual improvement of facility-wide Quality & Food Safety Management Systems (QMS & FSMS) to include all areas of production and support processes to maintain certifications of ISO 9001 and FSSC 22000. Coordinates, facilitates, and utilizes Lean and Six Sigma standards and techniques. Oversees Food Safety Program and documentation process for Dangerous Goods (HazMat) packaging. Active and contributing member of Lead Management Team.
PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Support and maintain a culture of “Continuous Improvement” across the plant by developing and implementing the plant’s action plan to meet corporate and customer quality and food safety standards.
Work with department managers, superintendent, and supervisors to implement improvement activities that will support reaching plant improvement objectives (crew meetings, training and development, etc.).
Facilitate and maintain company environmental, health, and safety (EHS) programs including communication of standards or changes, and conducting employee training.
Facilitate internal audits by creating an internal audit schedule, conducting audits and managing an audit team for all certifications requiring regular audits, including all quality and food safety programs.
Maintain quality and food safety certification(s) and environmental permitting.
Serve as the key point of contact for the EHS group and lead the plant health and safety team, as requested.
Analyze production and incident data, conduct investigations as necessary, identify root cause, identify process improvement opportunities, and implement quality and safety protocols.
Serve as the lead quality contact with customers to address customer concerns and interests and further strengthen the customer relationship. This includes maintaining knowledge of customer specific expectations and requirements, quality testing, interfacing with customer quality staff, responding to customer audits and information requests including providing letters of guarantee and/or certificates of audit, and assist plant management in translating customer satisfaction survey data into action plans.
Provide data to General Manager and Management Team regarding continuous improvement projects, returns and allowances metrics, vendor performance, internal and external audits, and corrective actions with regards to Quality, Food Safety, and EH&S.
Manage and maintain the plant’s applicable product testing and ensure all quality Gauges Repeatability and Reproducibility (G R&R) measurement devices are properly calibrated and maintained.
Walk the production floor on a regular basis, in a non-climate controlled environment.
Lead by example, following all Plant Rules and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment in production areas.
Occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds.
Support other plants within PCA network through mentoring and sharing best practices. Conduct internal audits within PCA network.
Additional duties as assigned by management, including corporate initiatives, lab requests, etc.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Five (5) years’ process improvement management experience (plus if within corrugated, packaging, or printing industries).
Three (3) years’ working knowledge of Quality standards (ISO 9001 and Food Safety).
Working knowledge of capability studies and statistical process control.
Six Sigma Green Belt certification (or willingness to obtain within 12 months).
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree in business, science, statistics, or engineering.
ISO Lead Auditor certification to 9001 standard.
Food safety certifications such as Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP).
Familiarity with Hazmat regulations.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Strong communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively to solicit buy-in from various audiences.
Ability to create and effectively lead teams.
Strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with production team and management.
Solid working knowledge of computer systems including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. Exposure to manufacturing shop floor and/or Statistics and Quality software preferred.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, charts, etc.
Ability to write reports, and generate professional business correspondence.
Strong listening, evaluating, and problem-solving skills. Ability to create alternative solutions and meet deadlines.
Solid analytical skills with the ability to identify opportunities for improvements and conduct deductive reasoning.
Ability to work in a fast paced, deadline-oriented environment, prioritize assignments, and handle multiple projects and/or requests concurrently.
Basic math ability and familiarity with statistical analysis.
Ability to use a tape measure, and to learn industry specific measurement devices.
Previous work experience as a member of a team, or a strong understanding of the importance of open communication and information sharing between team members.
Must be able to travel as necessary and possess a valid U.S. driver’s license.
