Overview
The New York Public Library is seeking to hire a dynamic and seasoned development professional to serve as the Major Gifts Officer. The Major Gifts Officer will actively and directly drive fundraising efforts from individual donors with a primary focus on five- and six-figure gifts. They will serve as the primary steward and solicitor of a portfolio of approximately 175 major gift prospects and donors.

The Major Gift Officer will play an integral role in developing the Library’s major gift pipeline for the research libraries overall - with a particular focus on Schomburg and its upcoming Centennial - deepening the involvement of our Library donors, and creating exciting engagement opportunities in honor of this incredible milestone.

1 month , this person will:
Have spent the majority of their time at the Schomburg Center and the Library for the Performing Arts, meeting their colleagues and understanding the needs and priorities of both research libraries.3 months , this person will:
Have arranged and completed 25 donor visits with Schomburg Center and 25 visits with Library for the Performing Arts prospects and existing donors.6 months and beyond , this person will:
Have secured 20 gifts and / or pledges for the research libraries.Responsibilities
Work closely with Development and leadership to develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan for major donors and prospects.
Personally identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward of a variety of major gift donor relationships to support all aspects of the Library’s top philanthropic priorities
Manage a portfolio of 175 major gift donors while systematically identifying and qualifying new major gift prospects
Advance donor relationships through in-person visits and bespoke engagement opportunities
Initiating contact from prospect status, development of appropriate cultivation strategies, moving donors and potential donors to close and/or upgrade gifts, make face to face solicitations, maintain stewardship contacts and forge relationships with new major gift prospects with a particular focus on those with capacity to make five and six-figure gifts
Draft briefings and proposals for donor meetings
Draft annual donor reports as required
Achieve an assigned annual revenue goal through the generation of increased and new major gifts and the continuing cultivation of annual donors and prospects
Required Education, Experience & Skills
Required Education & Certifications
Bachelor's degree, preferably with a Liberal Arts or Humanities background
Required Experience
5 to 7 years of Development experience including major gift solicitation experience in a fast-paced complex institution.
A proven, successful, track record of closing five and six figure gifts with a goal of attaining seven figures as well.
Strong track record of partnering with program staff to build donor relationships and foster long-term philanthropic support.
Required Skills
Demonstrated proficiency of metrics-driven fundraising methods
Superior interpersonal skills and ability to form strategic relationships with high net worth individuals
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong knowledge of both new and traditional major gift fundraising systems & strategies
Proficient experience using Raiser’s Edge or other comparable CRM programs
Demonstrated flexibility, reliability, and tact
