  The Education and Integrative Initiatives (EII) unit within the SDSS Dean’s Office aims to build a thriving community harmonized on understanding (life on) Earth and meeting the sustainability challenges of the 21st century. EII works with campus partners on key strategic initiatives including new curriculum and degree programs.

  About this role

  SDSS seeks a highly qualified lecturer to develop and teach courses in complex social-environmental systems (SES). This Lecturer will collaborate with faculty, academic staff, and program staff to support students in learning frameworks to understand and intervene in complex social-environmental systems where sustainability challenges take place.

  The position will be a part of the Education and Integrative Initiatives team and will work seamlessly with the faculty and teaching teams in the degree-granting units including Earth Systems, Sustainability Science and Practice, and the Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources. The role will involve collaborating across units for curriculum development, course evaluation, and will involve co-teaching with faculty across the School.

  The primary duties of this position include:

  Co-teach 1-2 courses per quarter, up to 5 courses of 3 units or more in one academic year, including SUST 210: Pursuing Sustainability: Managing Complex Social Environmental Systems and ENVRES 280: Introduction to Environmental and Resource Systems

  Partner with faculty, co-instructors, and academic staff to develop and enhance curricular materials and structure for existing courses; help ensure the courses meet their teaching and learning objectives

  Develop a new undergraduate course in complex social-environmental systems and contribute new curricula to existing courses

  Develop new case studies to illustrate interdisciplinary and systems-thinking approaches

  Supervise course teaching assistants and develop lesson plans and pedagogical approaches for course sections

  Advise students enrolled in courses

  Create personalized course evaluations and share relevant feedback with teaching teams to foster adaptive management and high quality of the courses.

  Qualifications

  Candidates should hold a terminal degree (Ph.D. preferred) in environmental and/or social science fields and one to three years of teaching social-environmental systems in higher education. Ideal candidates will have an interdisciplinary lens, strong knowledge of SES frameworks, and experience applying SES frameworks to sustainability challenges either in the classroom or in practice.

  Successful candidates will have exceptional verbal and written communication skills; engaging presentation and teaching skills; exceptional organizational skills; and a positive track record of team teaching and collaboration. We seek candidates with a flexible, open-minded, and collaborative mindset and an ability to navigate and innovate in a dynamic environment. Successful candidates will have a track record inspiring and supporting students; developing and implementing new programs or curriculum; and taking initiative to achieve agreed-upon goals.

  We seek candidates from a range of social-environmental systems fields and topics with expertise in characterizing, understanding, and intervening effectively in complex SES. Specific areas may include knowledge of frameworks, models, and tools for working within SES; sustainable development; decision-making under uncertainty; multi-actor collaboration including working with Native communities and underserved populations; and transformative systems change and leadership concepts. Of particular interest are candidates with both theoretical and practical background working in SES to achieve sustainability objectives, as well as candidates with understanding across a variety of thematic areas, including water, energy, food, urban planning, or health. Candidates may have experience in teaching, research, curriculum development, or practice.

  Salary Range

  The expected base pay range for this position is $79,000 -$104,000 per annum.

  Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.

  Initial appointments of the lecturer will be made for a term of one year beginning in the 2023-2024 academic year. We seek a candidate who can start on or before April 1, 2024 in order to collaborate with colleagues during spring quarter. We are flexible on the start date which may range from March to June 2024. This is a twelve-month appointment, renewable based on strong performance and programmatic needs. We offer a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package.
