We are seeking a Junior Designer for our 4-color book cover and interior design team.
The Junior Designer will join a busy and creative art and design department and should be collaborative and organized with excellent communication skills and a strong design portfolio. Candidates should have at least 1 year of experience in a publishing or print-media design department, preferably with hands-on experience in longform design. We prefer candidates who have the ability to work on-site at our New York office 2 to 3 days a week.
The Junior Designer assists the art department with both administrative and creative work, including managing routings, art organizational tasks, checking color proofs, facilitating freelancer work, and (with oversight) light design work: 1 to 3 book design projects per span. The Junior Designer will also interface with our Editorial, Production, and Production Editorial teams. The candidate should have experience with full production of a book or other print publications using InDesign: creating InDesign templates/style sheets, flowing manuscripts into InDesign, working with correction cycles, and preflighting files for print production.
Requirements:
• Mastery of Adobe InDesign on a Mac
• Proficiency in other Adobe software (Photoshop, Illustrator, Bridge)
• Excellent typographic design sense
• Great interpersonal and verbal communication skills, strong attention to detail, and timely and efficient follow-up skills
• Able to work collaboratively and cross-departmentally
• Able to manage and adhere to schedules
• Familiarity with Microsoft Word and manuscript tagging (Word Styles) is a plus
Additional skills/interests:
• An interest in working with photography and photo retouching
• An interest in working with illustration An interest in food and lifestyle media
Day-to-day responsibilities:
• Design work for book interiors and covers; including original design work plus design support work (for example, the design of a cover mechanical based on an already approved cover or designing a first pass of a book’s full interior based on an approved sample concept design)
• Communicating feedback to freelance designers and helping to manage freelance workflow, sharing freelance design work with art directors and editors, etc.
• Managing routings of own workload plus supporting the other designers’ routings when needed
• Providing support for our proofing process—with oversight, looking at and marking up color proofs for production and routing/mailing proofs
• Providing occasional art organization support: numbering art, making contact sheets
The salary for this position is $53,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
