Roles and Responsibilities
Wilton Manufacturing Engineering's PE Specialist and Support Services Tooling Team has a 2024 summer internship position for undergraduate and graduate students of Mechanical Engineering studies. There is a high preference for candidates with a background/experience in manufacturing and an interest in mechanical tooling design.
The main responsibility of the Mechanical Engineering Intern is to assist in the full end-to-end development of tools to be used within the Wilton Factory Manufacturing Plant. The development and implementation of these tools are crucial to industrializing existing production processes and helping the work centers run more efficiently.
The main responsibility of the intern is to assist Production Engineers in the development of the manufacturing process for new product. The following responsibilities may include (but are not limited to):
Interfacing with production process owners (e.g. engineers, technicians, etc.) to define scope and requirementsDesigning tools that meet said requirements and defend design decisions in cross-sector review meetingsDocument requirements, design concepts and any decisions in a formal design dossierCreate Technical Product Documentation (TPD), using coordinate dimensioning and/or GD&TWork in the clean room to assemble the new tooling with support of operations techniciansDefining how to validate the function of each tool, if special testing is requiredExecuting this testing, documenting results and updating design if necessaryDocument how the tools are to be assembled and work with process engineers and technicians to define training methods on how to use themTroubleshooting any issues with the functions of the various toolThe intern will be working with Senior Production Engineers during this internship
Education and Experience
Must be pursuing a degree in Mechanical EngineeringStrong understanding of basic Mechanical Engineering principles and test methodsExposure to static and kinematic designs or understanding of theoryExperience with 3D CAD softwareFamiliar with the use of 3D printing and design for printingCompetent with basic measurement equipment (e.g. Vernier Calipers, Micrometers, etc.)Experience or exposure to manufacturing environments and methods (e.g. CNC, lathe, etc.)Understanding of GD&T and coordinate dimensioning (ISO or ASME)Understanding of material properties for different applications
