About Intern - SEERI Radiation Effects - R&D Graduate Summer

What Your Job Will Be Like:

The Radiation Effects Research Department is seeking a motivated graduate summer intern to participate in the Science of Extreme Environments Research & Innovation (SEERI) Program. The SEERI Program philosophy is to foster the search for future researchers, engineers, and operators in radiation effects, pulsed power, and high energy density sciences. SEERI works to help cultivate an environment to excite and attract talented future scientists, physicists, and engineers by maximizing engaging opportunities that contribute to the nation through a unique access to facilities, resources, and broad programs found only at Sandia National Laboratories.

In this position, you will work alongside staff members conducting leading-edge research and analysis of radiation induced effects in electronics, materials, and other test objects. The goal is to deepen our knowledge of radiation effects physics (e.g., Single Event Effects, Total Ionizing Dose, and Dose in advanced microelectronics and systems through Test & Evaluation (T&E), Modeling & Simulation (M&S), and analysis. Our experiments may range from fundamental investigations into radiation effects in cutting-edge technologies to the response of electronic piece-parts, subsystems, and systems to natural space-based and/or man-made radiation environments. You will work in a collaborative environment with a diverse team and have access to some of the world’s most powerful tools.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

Investigate radiation effects in electronics and/or the interaction of radiation with materials and other test objects.

Develop or use numerical simulations to better understand single event, total ionizing dose, or dose rate effects on electronics and materials.

Team with other specialists to design experiments, analyze results, and present new insights or observations.

Develop, field, and analyze radiation diagnostics that are used to characterize the radiation environments produced at our state-of-the-art facilities.

This SEERI position will offer flexible, challenging, interesting, and cutting-edge research opportunities while being mentored by Sandia National Laboratories scientists and engineers. These hands-on experiences will be supplemented with technical seminars and facility tours which will expose you to the broad range of scientific disciplines represented at Sandia. You will also be provided the opportunity and encouraged to present your work and accomplishments to your peers and the Sandia scientific community at the end of the summer.

  Qualifications We Require:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  Earned bachelor's degree

Currently attending and enrolled full time in the spring term immediately preceding the internship (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program

  Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0

Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer

  U.S. citizenship

Note: If you have not yet started your graduate program, please apply to an undergraduate intern position.

  Qualifications We Desire:

Demonstrated knowledge and interest in studying radiation effects in electronics and/or the interaction of radiation with materials

Demonstrated knowledge and interest in studying radiation effects in ASICs, FPGAs, and custom circuits, etc. in Cadence or other design flow tools

Graduate-level Research and Development experience executing radiation experiments

Experience in modeling single event, total ionizing dose, displacement damage, and/or dose rate effects in electronics

  Experience working in team environments

Engineering fundamentals, engineering analysis and design, principles of radiation, and a strong engineering, math, and physics background

  Posting Duration:

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

  About Our Team:

The main purpose of the Radiation Effects Research Department is to conduct research and development involving intense radiation environments. All radiation effects from nuclear detonations (x rays, gamma rays, neutrons, electromagnetic pulse, etc.), natural and enhanced space environments, and in situ radiation are included. Research is in the broad areas of radiation effects in electronics, radiation effects in materials, and research in accelerator technologies with a primary emphasis in advancing weapons survivability.

A major role for the department is to provide design consultation and hostile radiation qualification assessment for Sandia’s nuclear weapon systems, component design, and new technology groups. Research and development spans transient radiation effects in electronics and optoelectronics from individual devices to circuits to systems involving phenomena driven by transient dose rate, total ionizing dose (TID) and single event (SEE). Active research in advanced materials includes response of materials and components to intense X-rays encompassing phenomena such as thermal, structural, shock and impulse responses. We also develop advanced experimental diagnostics and accelerator technology for enhancing the characterization and production of radiation environments.

Topical areas of research: Advanced materials, Devices, Circuits, Components, Systems, X-ray and E-Beam environments and diagnostics
