What Your Job Will Be Like:
Sandia National Laboratories Molecular and Microbiology Department in Albuquerque, NM seeks to hire interns to work on research projects focused on bioenergy and biosecurity. As a Bioscience R&D Undergraduate Summer Intern, you will join a multidisciplinary team and support exciting research projects using a wide range of molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry and analytical skills. You will be guided by a technical mentor, work closely with a team of researchers and interns on issues of national significance.
On any given day, you may be asked to participate in any of the following activities:
Laboratory maintenance
Microorganism culturing
Molecular cloning and transformation
PCR-based assays
Protein expression and purification
Nucleic acid isolation
Growth characterization
Throughout this internship, you will gain valuable hands-on laboratory experience. Successful interns are expected to gain increasing levels of independence and responsibility, and demonstrate a commitment to operating in, and contributing to, a safe operating environment.
Qualifications We Require:
You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:
Currently attending and enrolled full time in the spring term immediately preceding the internship (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited undergraduate program
Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
U.S. citizenship
Note: If you have not yet started your undergraduate program, please apply to a high school intern position.

Teaching or presentation experience
Biological laboratory research experience
Ability to work both independently and cooperatively in a team

The Molecular and Microbiology Department is within the Biological, Radiation and Signature Science, Technology and Engineering Center. The Center performs exploratory science and develops technology to address pressing national needs in energy security, homeland security, and national defense. Our work is focused on understanding and countering natural, traditional and engineered biological threats, as well as on developing biofuels and biomaterials. We employ synthetic biology to solve important issues for the Department of Energy, Department of Defense, Defense Threat Reduction Agency, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity, and Joint Program Executive Office.

Security Clearance:
