What Your Job Will Be Like:
We are seeking a highly motivated Summer - R&D Graduate Intern to join a dynamic team and assist in designing and conducting laboratory testing experiments to improve our abilities to detect PFAS. These experiments span across technical disciplines and require interaction with staff across a broad range of knowledge and expertise to properly construct and conduct the tests. Work will be primarily conducted in a collaborative group coordinating across different scientific and engineering disciplines to develop materials for effective PFAS sorption and methods for PFAS quantitation at trace concentrations. An intern with interest in environmental science, analytical chemistry, or materials science, are being sought.
On any given day you will be involved in:
Perform materials characterization, such as spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, etc.
Work closely with experimentalists to provide validated results of complex and challenging problems.
Aid in analytical measurement and detection of PFAS.
Synthesizing materials to sequester PFAS.
Perform adsorption and desorption experiments.
Development of new testing setups/techniques for unique sample geometries and/or environmental constraints.
General lab maintenance.
Qualifications We Require:
You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:
Earned bachelor's degree
Currently attending and enrolled full time in the spring term immediately preceding the internship (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
Be enrolled at one of the following institutions that qualifies for the Growing STEMS program with Sandia National Laboratories: Texas Tech University, New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, University of California Merced, or Amarillo College
Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
U.S. citizenship

Qualifications We Desire:
Pursuing a degree in Chemistry. Materials Science & Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Geology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.
College level general chemistry and lab or equivalent (AP Chemistry with 4 or 5).
At least one college-level laboratory class in a STEM subject area. Experience in safe handling of chemicals and materials.
Experience with data analysis and reduction.
Proven evidence of excellent teaming, interpersonal and written communication, and organizational skills.

About Our Team:
The Storage and Transportation Technologies Department conducts the R&D to support the development of the technical basis for the extended storage and transportation of commercial used nuclear fuel, and safeguards and security modeling and analysis of nuclear fuel cycle facilities. The department performs research pertaining to many areas of used nuclear fuel storage, transportation, and security. Within this department, this team is linking up with Geochemistry and the Materials Reliability groups to develop new methods for PFAS sequestration and degradation as well as critical material recovery from unconventional sources.

Security Clearance:
