About Intern - Applied Science & Tech Maturation - R&D Undergraduate Year-Round

  What Your Job Will Be Like:

  We are seeking undergraduate student interns to support research and development in the Applied Science and Technology Maturation Department in advanced manufacturing processes. Our team’s research vision is to leverage state-of-art manufacturing technology to impact current and future systems. This work will be performed onsite at Sandia in Albuquerque and will require a time commitment between 10 to 20 hours per week in the laboratory.

  On any given day, you may be called on to:

  Characterize printed components using latest digital inspection tools.

  Operate various commercial 3D printing tools

  Support the operation and maintenance of AM tools

  Support design and computer aided drafting (CAD) for 3D printing

  Characterize printed materials for physical, mechanical, and/or electrical properties

  Contribute to research reports and publications

  Outstanding candidates will demonstrate their interest in additive manufacturing by academic and/or practical experience in AM. The successful candidate must be customer oriented and possess good interpersonal skills. Self-initiative and self-motivation are necessary.

  Specific job assignments will depend upon the intersection of the needs of the projects at the time and the skills of the student. We expect this to be a multi-year internship and the intern’s responsibilities will grow as they gain experience.

  Student Internships are career development opportunities. We are especially interested in supporting interns who are interested in long-term working relationships and who are interested in applying to graduate school in a related field.

  Qualifications We Require:

  You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program

  Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major

  Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0

  Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer

  U.S. citizenship

  Qualifications We Desire:

  Classroom and/or laboratory experience at the undergraduate level with any of the following would be helpful in making an immediate impact:

  (1) additive manufacturing; (2) programming CNC systems or motion platforms; (3) CAD-Solidworks/CREO

  Demonstrated experience working in a research laboratory environment

  Demonstrated interest in Advanced Manufacturing

  We would also like to see that you can demonstrate the following qualities in order to work in a high-performing team environment:

  Technical background and passion to learn new tools/techniques and to share knowledge with the team

  Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance

  About Our Team:

  The mission of the Neutron Generator Applied Science and Technology Maturation Department is to conduct focused research towards the discovery, integration, and protection of the scientific knowledge behind the design, production, and sustainability of neutron generators. Our work uses computational modeling, materials science, chemistry, plasma science, high voltage & arc physics, advanced manufacturing methods, and neutron testing to support manufacturing and design. Along with our internal expertise, we also collaborate with a variety of internal organizations and external institutions to accomplish our goals. We apply this knowledge in creative and innovative ways for understanding the health of the existing stockpile, to design for the future, and to support national security. Research Areas within the Department include: properties of materials containing tritium, thin film structure of rare earth and transition metals/materials, surface and interface properties, gas-solid interaction, hydride formation and hydride thin film properties, encapsulation and mold release processes, plasma physics and modeling, and additive manufacturing investigations of metals and ceramics.

  Security Clearance:

  Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

  Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

  If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
