  Description of Work Unit

  The mission of the Department of English is to advance the study and teaching of literature, language, and writing. To accomplish this mission, the Department will provide the basis for a strong liberal arts education focused on critical literacy, critical thinking, and culturally informed interpretive skills. The Department is committed to maintaining comprehensive and interdisciplinary English studies curricula for undergraduate majors and graduate students.

  Colorado State University, with an enrollment of about 30,000, is located in Fort Collins, a growing community of about 170,000 at the base of the Rocky Mountain Front Range, 65 miles north of Denver. The area is noted for its natural beauty, economic vitality, and abundant cultural and recreational activities. Colorado State University is a land-grant institution and a Carnegie Research University (Very High Research Activity).

  The English Department has a total faculty of 90, approximately 365 undergraduate majors, and approximately 100 graduate students. We appoint approximately 35 graduate teaching assistants who teach creative and expository writing and English as a second language. Undergraduate concentrations in creative writing; English education; linguistics; literature; and writing, rhetoric, and literacy lead to a B.A. in English. Master of Arts degrees are offered in English education; literature; writing, rhetoric, and social change; and TEFL / TESL . A Master of Fine Arts degree is offered in three genres of creative writing – fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction.   Position Summary

  The Department of English hires Instructors in Composition from an applicant pool. Such instructors are hired based on enrollment. Instructors are responsible for teaching 1-4 sections each semester. Typically, instructors will teach College Composition, a range of other composition classes and, occasionally, lower-division English classes. Instructors are expected to develop and teach courses guided by established learning objectives and curricular guidelines.

  Requirements are an MA or MFA and college teaching experience in English composition. A terminal degree (PhD or MFA ) is required for teaching advanced courses.

  The 2023-2024 instructor general pool will expire on December 31, 2024. If positions are not available by that date, you will need to reapply. Faculty may be occasionally asked to teach a class in a second area, but the available positions are for the Composition Program.

  We seek candidates who are committed to a rhetorical approach to the teaching of composition and rhetoric. Preference will be given to candidates who are well-versed in social, cultural, and linguistic diversity and in approaches that emphasize the transformative power of writing to promote equity and access and to enact social change.

  Please submit the following required application materials. Only one document ( WORD , PDF , etc.) can be submitted for each of the following 4 categories:

  Cover letter: a letter of application that outlines your experience teaching composition with specific classroom and curriculum examples. You may also include specific CSU Composition Program courses you are interested in teaching. Specify the number of composition sections you would like to teach each semester. If interested in ESL /International Student sections of composition, in your letter of application please also include a statement of interest and an explanation of your experience and/or professional development in working with English language learners.

  Curriculum vitae: a detailed curriculum vitae that features your experience teaching college composition and rhetoric.

  Unofficial transcript: documentation of your post-baccalaureate degree (e.g., a photocopy of your diploma; a transcript that notes the degree conferred).

  Portfolio of College Teaching Materials: Four kinds of recent supporting materials are required. Compile all supporting materials into one single document ( WORD , Excel, or PDF ) that is no larger than 9MB. Upload that file to the Required Documents field, Portfolio. Please limit your portfolio to 20 pages plus course evaluations:

  written reports of classroom observations and/or recent teaching evaluations.

  syllabi representing up to three composition courses you are interested in teaching.

  one student paper with comments and one page of your reflection. In the reflection, you should explain how formative and summative feedback in the student paper addresses course goals.

  student course evaluations for one class.

  optional teaching philosophy.

  Contact Information for References: We require two letters of reference that speak to your teaching, addressed to Dr. Louann Reid, Chair, Department of English. You will provide contact information for two references. Upon submission of your application materials, your references will be notified and asked to submit their letter of recommendation.
