GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Wyoming Department of Agriculture is seeking to fill a Laboratory Assistant position for the Analytical Services Laboratory in Laramie, Wyoming. This position assists our scientists with testing in the laboratory through preparing samples, operating the autoclave and dishwasher, manually washing glassware, and making microbiological media and other items for agriculture and environmental testing. This position will have a good understanding of laboratory testing and understand the importance of maintaining a clean workspace by following all laboratory regulations for health and safety. This position also will assist the office specialist in the front office through interactions with customers, using our laboratory information management system (LIMS) to log in samples, result tests and send out reports and handling customer payments.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.
Prepares samples for a variety of environmental testing, prepares microbiological media, uses and maintains autoclave, and uses and maintains dishwasher to keep clean glassware throughout the laboratory.
Assists with inventory management for laboratory supplies.
Processes all laboratory samples through receiving of samples, assessing sample integrity, logging samples in LIMS, and report distribution. Regularly uses keyboarding and typing skills.
Uses other laboratory software systems to maintain documents and forms.
Perform routine maintenance and routine cleaning to meet requirements of USDA, FDA & EPA.
Provide customer service to a wide range of customers through in-person interactions, telephone inquiries and email. Sort and distribute mail and packages, answer phone, and maintain laboratory supplies.
May perform laboratory testing with proper training and competency. Follows standard analytical procedures while handling hazardous or infectious materials.
Works independently under minimal supervision. Supports the mission of the department through the support of laboratory scientists.
Acts as a resource to provide information or interpretation of laboratory-specific requirements and standards to staff, public, and or other government entities and/or determine the most effective way of meeting the needs of customers, staff, and the agency.
Qualifications
PREFERENCES:
Preferences may be given to the applicant with customer service.
KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge of the principles of scientific instrumentation.
Knowledge of professional and safe lab practices.
Knowledge of laboratory record keeping and strong attention to details.
Knowledge of appropriate safety standards when working with hazardous samples.
Knowledge of state and federal regulations and requirements for chemical or biological analyses.
Knowledge of federal regulations and state statutes, and rules of confidentiality.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Associate's Degree (typically in Healthcare Services)
Experience:
0-1 year of progressive work experience (typically in a medical or environmental laboratory)
OR
Education & Experience Substitution:
2-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in a medical or environmental laboratory)

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Works with environmental samples.
Works closely with hazardous chemicals and substances.
Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
Some tasks may be repetitive.
Occasional exposure to loud noises.
Occasional lifting of supplies and boxes.
