Choral Director

　　Freire is looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated choral director to launch Freire Charter School's new choir, created in the memory of long-time Freire board member, Dr. Gerald Gerry Escovitz, who was a choral singer as his passion. Initially the choir will consist of students from Freire Charter High School. In future years, we may include students from our other Freire high schools.

　　The choral director should be creative, assertive, and passionate about music. The choral director should be able to interpret various styles of music and demonstrate exceptional communication, leadership, and organizational skills. Additionally, the choral director should empower our students to enhance their skills and reach goals. This person will report to the Freire Schools Special Projects Coordinator, and will work closely with the Freire High Head of School and 21st Century CLC After school Program Director.

　　Choral Director Responsibilities:

　　Conducting auditions of students to identify and select suitable choral members.Creating suitable choral formations for rehearsals and performances, which may include school events and opportunities off campus.Facilitating choral rehearsals and ensuring that choral members attend rehearsals regularly. Must track attendance for grant purposes.Selecting individual choral members to perform solos.Providing the necessary guidance and direction during choral rehearsals to assist choral members in achieving the correct tone, pitch, rhythm, tempo, and harmony.Deciding on appropriate musical pieces for the chorus to perform based on the venue, occasion, and student interest. Should consider Gerry's musical interest as part of music selection.Instructing choral members on how to warm up before rehearsals and performances.Establishing a performance dress code.Working with the Freire Schools Special Project Coordinator to organize at least two performances a year, encouraging families, staff, and other students to attend.Directing choral members during musical performances to ensure that the desired sound is achieved.

　　Choral Director Requirements

　　Background, degree or certification in music, music education, or related field.Experience working as a choral director or in music.Sound musical knowledge.The ability to interpret various styles of music.Strong leadership and listening skills.A passion for music.Patient, creative, and assertive.

　　Compensation

　　The Choral Director will be paid $50/hr and will typically work 5 hours a week (2.5 hours a day) during after school hours.
