Department Summary:
The VA Benefits Division (P860) supports the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and works specifically with the Benefit delivery organizations in the VA such as the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA). Currently the Division supports several high profile, complex, and inter-related projects and tasks across VBA including benefits delivery and support organizations, known as Lines of Business (LOBs) and Staff Offices. The benefits provided by VBA are Disability Compensation, Pension, Home Loan Guaranty, GI Bill Benefits, Life Insurance, Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment, and Service Member Transition support. Staff office support includes the Office of Business Integration, Office of Financial Management, Performance Analyst and Integrity, and many others.

Roles and Responsibilities:
The Division is seeking a motivated Group Leader to guide and mentor staff in driving innovative solutions, thought leadership, and evidence-based recommendations so the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) can deliver the benefits and services Veterans need to live full, independent, and productive lives.
This position offers the opportunity to manage a diverse staff of professionals directly supporting Veteran’s Benefits Administration (VBA) leaders in a fast-paced and dynamic atmosphere where the ability to make a difference and influence impactful outcomes is critical to success. The GL is also expected to help the Department Manager, Program Managers, and Project Leaders provide the best “MITRE” staff to related projects and activities that cut across our sponsor work program. The ability to establish relationships and partnerships across critical MITRE program organizations and Innovation Labs is key to bringing the entire corporation to the fight on our sponsor’s toughest challenges.
Other responsibilities include:
Support department efforts to staff new work programs with the sponsor.
Ability to manage and guide staff in their professional development.
Promote the advancement and application of model-based engineering, complex systems engineering, systems-of-systems engineering, and systems thinking.
Contribute to teams with expertise in one or more of the following systems engineering practice areas: system life-cycle management, requirements engineering, modeling & simulation, systems architecture, system design, quality management, test and evaluation, and process analysis and improvement.

Communicate with Project/Task Leads and solicit input on performance.
Serve as main point of contact for onboarding new employees to guide staff in navigating the MITRE organization and processes.
Manage interpersonal dynamics, and performance concerns amongst employees in their Group, their colleagues, and the project leaders they support.
Embrace working with MITRE, sponsor, and industry partner teams in a hybrid format with staff distributed across numerous sites, and the technology and methods required to be effective, efficient, and successful.
Basic Requirements:
Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 8 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 5 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
Ability to obtain a VA Suitability.
Ability to think broadly and strategically backed up with significant experience.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work across the various organizations within MITRE, our sponsor space, and industry to achieve important outcomes for our sponsors.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s or comparable relevant technical experience
2 years’ experience in a leadership role (e.g., Task Lead, Project Lead, etc.)Preferred candidates will be recognized by middle and senior leadership as a thought leader.
