Shreveport Times/ shreveporttimes.com, part of the USA TODAY Network , is seeking a curious, persistent, reporter to join our team. This is not a position where the reporter recounts what happened at council or commission or whose day is dictated by meetings and incremental stories.
This reporter will hold government officials accountable, and capture the stories of how local and state politics intertwine with readers' lives. This reporter's sources will consistently go beyond officials to include the voices of those most impacted by local government's decisions.
This reporter should be able to own their beat by becoming the community's leading voice on issues that impact the audience directly through investigations, explanation and analysis. They should be able to develop stories from idea to publicationwhile working in a collaborative newsroom.
Shreveport is the third most populous city in Louisiana behind New Orleans and Baton Rouge. The Greater Shreveport Area, which includes neighboring Bossier City, boasts a thriving arts and entertainment scene with over 475 events every year, highlighted by the largest arts festival in the state, Prize Fest. It is also home to the Louisiana State Fair.
The seat of Caddo Parish, Shreveport is a growing area with opportunities to cover a variety of issues and topics that impact the daily lives of readers.
Requirements: Bachelor's or master's in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 1-3 years related experience. Strong communication skills, news judgment and headline-writing ability. Strong interpersonal skills, including empathy and compassion. Proficiency on social media platforms; including but not limited to Facebook, X/Threads, Instagram and Reddit, and experience engaging readers in this public space. Energetic self-starter and a fast thinker who can spot stories that matter. An understanding of metrics/analytics programs such as Parse.ly and Google Trends and development of story ideas derived from data. Understanding of SEO and other optimization opportunities and a demonstrated ability to learn new skills in social and digital. Ability to multitask and excel in a fast-paced environment under intense deadline pressure. Ability to work collaboratively and efficiently with a team of journalists. Strong writing, spelling and grammar skills and knowledge of AP style. Command of media law and principles of ethical conduct. This role requires a valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
