The Lafayette Daily Advertiser/ www.theadvertiser.com part of the USA TODAY Network , is seeking a curious, persistent reporter to join our team. This is not a position where the reporter simply rewrites news releases or tells simple stories.
As a General Assignment/Trending Reporter, you will play a crucial role in covering a wide range of news topics, events and trends. This position requires a proactive and resourceful journalist who can adapt quickly to different subject matters and can deliver compelling stories that resonate with our audience. The ideal candidate is passionate about staying ahead of current events, possesses excellent writing skills and thrives in a fast-paced news environment.
This reporter should be able to own the beat by becoming the community's leading voice on issues that impact the audience directly. The right candidate should be able to develop stories from idea to publication while working in a collaborative newsroom.
The Daily Advertiser is in Lafayette, Louisiana, the gateway to Acadiana. It's the home of the University of Louisiana Lafayette and a hub for Cajun culture. The area is a jambalaya of diversity, arts and culture, food and fun. There's always a festival, Mardi Gras celebration or cultural event to attend. In the small towns around Lafayette, you'll experience the "real Mardi Gras" -- a tradition that involves chasing chickens on horseback and gathering ingredients for a gumbo.
Requirements: Bachelor's or master's in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Strong communication skills, news judgment and headline-writing ability. Strong interpersonal skills, including empathy and compassion. Proficiency on social media platforms; including but not limited to Facebook, X/Threads, Instagram and Reddit, and experience engaging readers in this public space. Energetic self-starter and a fast thinker who can spot stories that matter. An understanding of metrics/analytics programs such as Parse.ly and Google Trends and development of story ideas derived from data. Understanding of SEO and other optimization opportunities and a demonstrated ability to learn new skills in social and digital. Ability to multitask and excel in a fast-paced environment under intense deadline pressure. Ability to work collaboratively and efficiently with a team of journalists. Strong writing, spelling and grammar skills and knowledge of AP style. Command of media law and principles of ethical conduct. This role requires a valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
