Scott Bridge Company, Inc.'s roots date back to 1933 when Mr. I. J. Scott (Jud) and two partners formed Scott Construction Company in Thomasville, Georgia, constructing many highways, airports, bridges, and dams in the Southeast. Mr. Scott left this firm in 1957 and formed his own company, The Scott Company, in Opelika, Alabama, his home. The Scott Company incorporated in 1965 as Scott Bridge Company with I. J. Scott and his son, I. J. Scott, Jr. Also in 1965 Mr. Gerard Swarthout came to the company, became company president, and retired in 1987.
Scott Bridge Company has been a member of the Alabama Road Builders since 1947, and became known as a river bridge contractor, completing many projects on the Warrior, Alabama, Coosa, Tennessee, and Chattahoochee Rivers.
Currently Mr. I. J. Scott's grandsons, I. J. Scott, III (Ike), President, William Scott, Vice President and David Scott, Board Member, own and continue to further the principles and traditions of their father and grandfather before them.
Position Summary
This position is accountable for providing field engineering on Heavy Civil Projects for Scott Bridge Company, Inc. The incumbent will typically work closely with the Project Manager, Project Superintendent, Foreman, Pile Drivers, Welders, Carpenters, Laborers, Helpers and other skilled or semi-skilled craft persons on the work site.
Responsibilities
Works with the Project Management Team and jobsite work crews to ensure the successful completion of construction projects.
Daily correspondence with the Project Owner and Inspection Team.
Provides oversight of construction activities to ensure work is installed per the Contract documents.
Performs construction engineering calculations for temporary work structures.
Prepares written construction work plans, including necessary drawings.
Creates and updates project schedule.
Tracks completion of items of work.
Works with Project Manager to ensure procurement of materials from suppliers that are required at the jobsite to complete the project.
Inventories, checks, examines and measures materials received to ensure quality and quantity.
Interprets project plans and specifications.
Provides work control lines and elevations that are required for accurate measurement and correct installation of materials by crafts, i.e., forms for concrete pours, anchor bolts, piping hangers and supports, etc.
Checks as-built conditions that require the use of surveying techniques.
Coordinates surveying activities with the project surveyor to meet the construction requirements.
Ensures that project team members and work crews work in a safe manner and are knowledgeable of safe work practices and policies.
Participates in Safety and Environmental initiatives that will contribute to compliance of State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs.
Requirements
A B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering/Construction Science or related discipline, or equivalent work experience is required. Prior hands-on work experience in the marine construction industry as a Summer Intern or Co-op Engineer is preferred but not required. The incumbent must have a working knowledge of Project Management and Administration, Marine Construction Materials, Procurement, Estimating, Scheduling, Project Tracking Software, Cost Control Engineering & Project Standards, and Safety & Environmental Compliance.
The incumbent must have the ability to quickly learn the technical aspects of the business; be an effective communicator; and have the ability to interface well with employees at all levels of the organization.
