What You'll Do
Principal is looking for a Sr Data Engineer to join our US Principal Financial Network and Principal Securities organization. In this role, you will aid in building a data engineering platform that enables us to drive better experiences for our customers. As a senior data engineer you’ll bring your knowledge of creating, hosting, and monitoring data solutions to build scalable, repeatable patterns. You’ll work closely with Product Manager, Product Owner, Tech Product Manager, Delivery Manager and engineering teams to establish a modern data platform using cloud and sunsetting legacy processing. We use an agile practice, striving for fully managed regular deployments. This role presents the unique opportunity to influence the process and end product, while working with an existing skilled data engineering community.
Here are a few things you’ll do:
Understand business context and transfer that knowledge to build solutions around data repositories while keeping an enterprise and engineering approach
Implement and iterate on a wide range of AWS services using modern languages and managed deployment options.
Engage with business partners as a technology consultant
Build out our data zones (raw, curated, serving) in our cloud environment leveraging AWS Services and scripting solutions to transform the data
Understand the trade-offs between technical, analytical, and product needs and lead to solutions that take all the needs into account.
Develop strategies for data acquisition and influence others within the business area through explanation of policies, patterns, and practices.
Continue maintenance, support, divestment initiatives of legacy platforms
Provide technical advice and weigh in on technical decisions that impact other teams or the enterprise at large.
Make the team stronger through code review, detailed documentation, technical guidance, and mentoring

Who You Are
Bachelor's degree plus 4 + years related work experience or a Master's in related field.
Experience working with Relational Database Management Systems.
Ability to work directly with data and datastores through programming language such as SQL, Python, Java, etc.
Experience building/operating systems for data extraction, ingestion, and processing of large data sets.
Building data products incrementally and integrating and managing datasets from multiple sources
Data Management practices (data profiling, data quality management, Master Data Management).
Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS Preferred.
Knowledge of modern data modeling techniques and data structures preferred.
Understanding of ETL/ELT concepts.
Data lakes, data mesh architectural practices preferred
Reporting oriented data products and reporting technologies preferred.
Salary Range Information
Salary ranges below reflect targeted base salaries. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.
Salary Range (Non-Exempt expressed as hourly; Exempt expressed as yearly)
$77350 - $182400 / year

Work Environments
This role offers in-office, hybrid (blending at least three office days in a typical workweek), and remote work arrangements (only if residing more than 30 miles from Des Moines, IA, or Charlotte, NC). You’ll work with your leader to figure out which option may align best based on several factors.
