About Executive Director, Biostatistics and Epidemiology Data Analytics Center (BEDAC), School of Public Health

The Executive Director of the Biostatistics and Epidemiology Data Analytics Center (BEDAC) is responsible for providing leadership and strategic direction, developing new partnerships, and implementing a comprehensive program of research and technology services for this established service center.

Located on the Boston University Medical Campus, BEDAC provides researchers from universities, hospitals, government, and private industry with a menu of state-of-the-art data services including data management, project management, web application development, statistical and epidemiological analysis, clinical trial management, informatics, research data storage service, and other technology services crucial to conducting translational, clinical, and basic research.

BEDAC believes that the cultural and social diversity of our faculty, staff, and students is vitally important to the distinction and excellence of our center. We seek colleagues who will support our institutional commitment to ensuring that BU is inclusive, equitable, diverse, and a place where all constituents can thrive. BU is an AAU institution with a rich tradition dedicated to inclusion and social justice. We are proud to be the first American university to award a Ph.D. to a woman, and we continue our tradition of educating a diverse and talented student body. The Boston University School of Public Health pursues a detailed plan for fostering a diverse and inclusive community recognizing that diversity of experience deepens the intellectual endeavor.

The Executive Director will lead an existing talented and cohesive group of data managers, application developers, project managers, and statistical analysts. The Executive Director will also enjoy the many benefits of working in a university setting, including exposure to a wide variety of research topics, autonomy, the ability to collaborate with and mentor students, and the freedom to build infrastructure, including the development of private sector connections. There is an opportunity to be self-motivated and embrace new and evolving technologies. The ideal candidate will ensure that BEDAC is positioned to advance the development of data resources, enhance data management and statistical methodologies, optimize research operations, and dynamically scale capabilities to align with the needs and requirements of the research communities we support. The Executive Director will have the qualifications suitable for a faculty appointment at the Boston University School of Public Health. Broadly, they will be expected to spend approximately half of their time leading and managing BEDAC and approximately half of their time advancing their own research and scholarship as a BUSPH faculty member.

  Principal duties include:

Build, coach and inspire a high performing team of 40 data scientists. Manage the team’s performance and identify opportunities for ongoing growth and development.

Develop and execute a data and analytics strategy for advancing BUSPH and BEDAC capabilities and business impact. Oversee the development, implementation, continuous improvement, and day-to-day management of an innovative, cohesive data enterprise designed to meet the needs of researchers across the health sciences fields.

Collaborate with leadership and administration in crafting best business, marketing, and financial practices for BEDAC. Develop effective, strategic partnerships with business leaders to identify and prioritize analytics projects, measure performance, and incubate new opportunities.

Develop an ongoing strategic plan for BEDAC’s flexible growth and long-term success, including well defined goals. Shape processes and resourcing, develop a long-term roadmap, and effectively interface with key stakeholders at BUSPH, BUMC, and BU.

Spearhead partnerships with IT/Analytics components within BU to drive program management activities and ensure data process, platforms and priorities are aligned and accelerate analytics and insight capabilities. Form a deep understanding of the needs of researchers with regard to use of technology for enabling successful research. Understand how to best leverage technology and resources available at BEDAC to assist collaborators in achieving their research goals.

Implement a process to forecast research-computing demands and develop comprehensive reports/analytics on BEDAC resource usage (i.e., utilization, wait time, cost/core hours, financial projection) for use by SPH and BEDAC leadership. Act as champion for a robust data culture and digital capabilities, partnering with BU IS&T to ensure proper data security and HIPAA compliance.

Benchmark BEDAC service capacity vs. other research computing centers with an eye to continued development and refinement of activities.
