JOB SPECIFICS
Washington County is currently hiring for an Environmental Specialist/Sr. Environmental Specialist to join our Food, Pools & Lodging Team. The successful candidate will inspect licensed food, beverage, lodging, pool, manufactured home park, campground, and youth camp establishments. The candidate will also conduct plan review, assist with licensing, respond to complaints, assist in foodborne outbreak investigations, and participate on various work groups. They will provide consultation, technical assistance and enforce the applicable state rules and county ordinances. The position will also be responsible for responding to public health nuisances. Depending on qualifications this position could be filled as either the Environmental Specialist or Senior Environmental Specialist level.

Previous paid experience inspecting licensed food, lodging, and swimming pool establishments
Registered as an Environmental Health Specialist or Sanitarian with the State of Minnesota
SELECTION TECHNIQUE : Your training and experience will be rated based on the required application material submitted and the top scoring candidates will be forwarded to the hiring department for further consideration.
HOURS / DAYS : The position will be based at the Washington County Service Center in Cottage Grove, with potential Telework options available. Work hours are primarily Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 am – 4:30 pm. Evening and weekend hours may be required to support staff in the field. Work location and hours are subject to change based on business need.
ANTICIPATED HIRING RATE : $31.74 - $37.52 Hourly

JOB SUMMARY
The Environmental Specialist is an entry-level professional position involving work of a varied nature to promote and protect public health and the environment. The position includes a basic range of duties relating to environmental health, including ensuring compliance with applicable laws and providing assistance and education within the community. The position may also assist senior staff and management with developing and evaluating programs. Areas of assignment can include subsurface sewage treatment systems; solid waste management; hazardous waste management; food, beverage and lodging establishments; pools; recreational camping areas; manufactured home parks; public health nuisance; complaints; public water supplies; recycling or other environmental health programs. Work involves collaborating with cities, townships, businesses, citizens and government and private agencies.
EMPLOYMENT CRITERIA
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (General): Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Health, Sanitary Sciences, the physical, or biological sciences, or a related environmental health or natural resources field, including at least 30 semester or 45 quarter hour credits in the physical, chemical or biological sciences. The position may require obtaining certification as a Hazardous Material Manager or Advanced SSTS Inspector. Certification as a State of Minnesota Registered Environmental Health Specialist/Registered Sanitarian (REHS/RS) must be obtained within 2 years of hire. A background check is required. Must have means of reliable transportation for business purposes; individuals operating a motor vehicle for county business must possess a valid driver's license.
