Enterprise Platforms is a company-wide center of excellence within Technology comprised of both Product Management and Engineering functions. Our critical platforms (Global Account Receivable, Global Loyalty & Benefits, and Digital Banking) underpin American Express' essential customer segments, value propositions and business lines.
Global Loyalty and Benefits powers the Membership Reward points, Amex Offers, Insurance, and Card benefits for over 112 million cards in over 58 markets worldwide.Global Accounts Receivable powers our customer's financial life and Amex's growth by building innovative Account Receivable Solutions for Consumer Card, Loans, and Commercial Card businesses.Digital Banking powers Deposits, Financial Planning, Bill Payment, and Money Movement experiences through innovative platform products & services while giving customers the ability to manage their money in an automated and predictive way.Enterprise Platforms' charter is to modernize the company's core platforms to dramatically increase Amex's strategic agility and intensify its customer-centric approach.
We are looking for a Director of Engineering to support our modernization journey, enabling our markets to leverage groundbreaking technology that will provide flexibility, scalability, and speed to market.
We plan to hire multiple Directors across two markets (US and India) and skills will vary by team and market. Below are high-level responsibilities and qualifications, and we welcome applicants with varying specialties.
Key Responsibilities:
Drive high-level and detailed technical designs; conduct design and code reviews as needed.Drive consistent development practices including the use of common tools, enterprise frameworks, and common components.Guide team members in implementing new, highly available, scalable, resilient applications.Cultivate an environment of continuous engineering improvement through mentoring, feedback, and metrics.Lead software development teams, sourcing necessary resources, acting as an escalation point, and removing impediments to achieve goals and objectives.Collaborate with a wide variety of stakeholders within business and technology teams to drive the change required to execute product roadmaps.Enable integrated teams to deliver technology solutions in support of key product initiatives by working closely with product managers, technical project managers, architects, and engineers.Collaborate within and across business units to prioritize, plan, and execute the development schedule for major product releases.Identify and implement strategies to attract and maintain a highly skilled and engaged workforce.
Qualifications:
6+ years of demonstrated ability managing agile software engineering teams and designing and building software products in a fast paced, complex, and dynamic product development environment.Extensive hands-on experience building and managing the development of complex, large scale distributed enterprise applications and products that require a deep understanding of application logic and dependencies.Experience with Scrum, Kanban, or another Agile application development methodology.Proven ability to influence decision-making at all levels within an organization, and in a variety of contexts.Experience with troubleshooting, analysis, research, and resolution using advanced query, programming skills, root cause analysis, and identification of risks and mitigations.Hands-on coding experience in Java, Go, or PythonExpertise in enterprise solutions like Kafka, RDBMS, NoSQL databases.Detailed understanding of RESTful API design principles with solid API development experience.Demonstrated experience with Mainframe - JCL, COBOL, DB2, IMS, Stored procs, MQ, SYNCSORT required; Easytrieve a plusExcellent interpersonal skills.Bachelor's degree or equivalent in computer science, computer engineering, or related field required.
Salary Range: $170,000.00 to $255,000.00 annually + bonus + equity (if applicable) + benefits
