Description of Job
About the Position
This position is located in the Region 5 Traffic Safety Branch in our Alamosa office. As an Electronics Specialist III, you will be responsible for installing, operating, maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing telecommunications, electronic, and electro-mechanical devices for Region 5's communication systems.
Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
Perform electronic, electro-mechanical and communication equipment selection, installation, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, repair and upgrades to resolve operational equipment issues using appropriate test equipment, hand and power tools.
Perform second level testing of failed equipment returned from the field. Determine if device is repairable or needs to be replaced or returned to vendor.
Coordinate field troubleshooting activities, assist in fact gathering efforts and oversee implementation of changes or upgrades to existing site or system configurations.
Develop, test and install modifications or new traffic signal software programs, coordination plans, time of day signal sequences, electronic and electro-mechanical hardware, communication equipment and systems. This includes testing and acceptance of contractor installed systems and equipment.
Serve as network administrator for the Region 5 traffic signal system and all associated equipment.
Troubleshoot, maintain and repair communication systems, regeneration systems or structures and network systems or equipment troubleshooting, maintenance and repair. This includes cellular, wireless, microwave, fiber optic and hard wired communications systems and equipment. Regeneration structure includes heating/cooling, power and emergency power systems.
Provide technical guidance and support for all Traffic Regions Statewide, in the design, installation and management of the traffic signal system network.
As a technical expert, provide guidance and training to others in the installation, maintenance and repair of Fiber, Broadband, Cellular equipment and other communication systems.
Develop programs and logic functions for traffic signal controllers, PLCs to control tunnel systems, power and lighting.
Work with project contractors in reviewing plans and identifying best possible alternative to design issues.
Create maintenance guidelines or practices on new systems and or device deployed into the field.
Testify to present information regarding work or facts in a case.
Provide written and or electronic documentation.
Other job duties as assigned.
Work Environment:
Your schedule will primarily be 8:00 am – 5:00 pm work hours, Monday-Friday.
Frequent travel during work day for training, meetings, and assigned work orders .
Occasional overnight travel within Colorado.
Required to operate CDOT vehicles.
Required to respond to emergencies outside of normal work hours.
Required to use appropriate personal protective equipment.
Required to work on ladders and/or bucket trucks at heights from 10-80 feet.
Exposure to loud noises.
Exposure to fumes, odors, gases, dusts, etc. that may affect breathing, eyes and skin.
Exposure to electrical voltage up to 600V and electrical shock.
Required to lift up to 100 lbs.
Required to work in close proximity to heavy traffic.
Required to work in extreme temperatures and weather conditions for long periods of time - hot and cold.
Due to locations of some of the equipment, must be physically able to work at 11,000 feet altitude.

Minimum Qualifications
Experience Only:
Three (3) years of technical experience repairing, performing maintenance, installing, or modifying, electronic, electro-mechanical or communication equipment and devices.OR
Education and Experience:
A combination of relevant education and experience equal to at least 3 years.
An Associate's degree or successful completion of the equivalent of 60 semester hours of training at an accredited college or university or recognized non-correspondence technical school with 30 semester hours of course work in any of the following areas: electronics, electrical engineering, computer science, communication technology, and information technology, may be substituted for up to two years of the required experience.
Full-time technical experience repairing, performing maintenance, installing, or modifying, electronic, electro-mechanical or communication equipment and devices will be considered.
Equipment and devices should primarily be in one or more of the following areas: T elecommunication electronics (e.g., cellular, modem), Sonet and Ethernet, close circuit and detection cameras or equipment, radios, traffic signal equipment and programming, fiber optics (wireless and/or hardwired) and Intelligent Transportation Systems. Experience must have included work with fiber-optic assets and computers/information technology.

On-call work (rotating basis as well as subject to call)
Must be willing to respond to emergencies outside regular work hours and work overtime including weekends and holidays.
Must possess a current, valid regular driver’s license.
Must obtain a CDL Permit within 30 days of hire as a condition of continued employment. As part of obtaining your CDL permit, you must pass the DOT drug test and DOT physical.
Must obtain and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B with no restriction on air brakes within 6 months of hire as a condition of continued employment.

The Exceptional Applicant will be an experienced Electronics Specialist with proven ability or accomplishment in the following:
Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Description of the Job section;
Years of State service experience related to the duties of this position;
Highest work/personal ethics and integrity;
Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and best practices of digital and analog electronic theory, telecommunications, and computer wireless networks;
A current Colorado Journeyman’s Electrician License.
Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and best practices of communication protocols such as IP/TCP/UDP/FTP;
Comprehensive knowledge and experience in installing, repairing, replacing, and troubleshooting a wide variety of electronic systems and equipment including traffic signal devices;
Knowledge of/experience with best practices for WIFI networking, Structured cabling. (CAT 5E and CAT 6);
Knowledge of /experience with LAN/WAN , maintaining and troubleshooting existing networks;
Experience with point-to-point, point-to-multi-point, microwave, and other wireless communications;
Experience with computer hardware implementation and handling;
Experience with regeneration systems including heating/cooling, power and emergency power systems;
Experience with fiber optic cabling handling, termination and splicing;
Experience with fiber optic and wireless transceivers, transmitters, receivers, and repeaters;
Knowledge and understanding of electronics and control programming;
Experience with signaling devices (e.g., ramp metering devices, Close Circuit TV, radar;
Excellent reasoning, analytical, troubleshooting, and problem solving skills;
Strong attention to detail and accuracy;
Excellent time and project management skills;
Strong oral and written communication skills;
Excellent organizational skills;
Experience working with multiple and diverse stakeholders, with sensitivity to their needs and priorities;
