  Summary This position is located in Department of Homeland Security (DHS), United States Coast Guard (USCG), Aviation Logistics Center (ALC), Medium Range Surveillance (MRS) Division, MRS Programmed Depot Maintenance (PDM) Branch, Elizabeth City, NC. Responsibilities The position's primary purpose is to perform a wide range of tasks related to the installation, fabrication, maintenance, modification, and repair of major electronic systems of significant complexity or which are modifications of previous systems. Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include: Analyzing problems and determining nature and extent of repairs, alignment or adjustments required for complete systems as well as individual equipment and subsystems. Determining work sequence and selecting tools and test instruments or specialized test equipment necessary to perform properly the required checks and adjustments. Disassembling and reassembling equipment as required to effect necessary cleaning, lubrication, corrosion prevention, and repairs. Performing operational tests to assure that all components and systems are working within prescribed tolerances. Coordinating with technical and professional personnel on operation specifications and changes to equipment. Demonstrating or explaining proper techniques, method of operation, and safety practices. This is a DAY SHIFT position Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship is required. Applicant is required to meet the physical requirements of the position. The applicant is subject to pre-appointment and random drug testing. This position requires a secret clearance. Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service. Subject to overtime or recall. Rotating shift work may be required. May be required to fly on Coast Guard aircraft. All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. Qualifications Applicants will be evaluated on their ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience. Eligibility will be determined by the relevance, scope, and quality of all experience and training, regardless of where or how acquired. Applicants will be rated and ranked based on their knowledge of the following job elements: 1. Ability to perform the work of Electronics Mechanic without more than normal supervision (SCREEN OUT ELEMENT). 2. Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. 3. Use of Test Equipment : Electronics. 4. Theory of Electronics. 5. Troubleshooting (Electronic Equipment). 6. Ability to Use Hand and Power Tools - Electronics. 7. Ingenuity (Ability to suggest and apply new methods). Applicants must have a knowledge of electronic operating principles such as circuit elements, digital logic, microprocessors, core memory, interface circuits, digital data transmission, microwave, antennas, signal behavior, amplification, and display. Also must be able to independently troubleshoot, install, overhaul, repair, and test malfunctions in complex electronic systems where circuit theory must be used to understand the operation of individual circuits, and the possible interaction of other circuits which create a malfunction. Use reverse engineering to identify the cause of operating problems on electronic systems. Applicants must be able to perform these duties at the journeyman level. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education This position does not have a positive education requirement.
