Our Carrigtwohill site in Cork is a modern ‘bulk tablet’ facility manufacturing solid and capsule formulations for key therapeutic areas such as oncology and virology. It’s a state-of-the-art, multi-purpose facility set to develop further following a recent €60 million investment.
Your new Role:
Reporting to the site director and part of the site senior leadership team, you will champion site EHS Culture across all functional areas, working cross functionally with other members of the leadership team building to deliver best in class safety and environmental performance.

Key Responsibilities of your role;
• Lead and develop the site EHS team building a high performing team culture.
• Manage the site’s environmental and safety management systems (ISO 14001 & ISO 45001) and drive continuous improvement throughout all programs e.g. behavioural safety, process safety, ergonomics, industrial hygiene & contractor management.
• Managing site regulatory and corporate compliance requirements.
• Drive EHS performance and safety culture using approved KPIs.
• Successfully drafting and delivering EHS strategic objectives and ensuring that goals are met and managed within the EHS Department.
• Understanding of local and global EHS regulations and practices. May represent AbbVie externally on matters related to EHS with external regulatory agencies and organizations.
• Monitor regulatory requirements/trends, conduct impact analyses, and implement programs to ensure compliance with both regulatory and internal standards.
• Applied knowledge and understanding of EHS standards, policies, systems, and programs applicable to area of responsibility to ensure systems are in place to enable operating in legal and ethical compliance with regard to EHS issues.
• Serve as EHS subject matter expert and main point of contact to key functions at the site supporting change management, risk assessment, site inspections, and incident investigations.
• Ensure EHS design reviews are completed for new processes and equipment and identified risks are mitigated.
• Ensure interdependent safety & compliant behaviours in all aspects of the business. Driving EHS culture to achieve zero injuries or environmental exceedances onsite.
• Coordinate the site security and Crisis Action Readiness programs.
• Ensure benchmarking process is in place to keep up to date with current trends, best practice in all aspects of EHS.
• Actively participate in the IME Global EHS network and projects/programs e.g., Crisis Management Team, European benchmarking forum, AbbVie EHS network.
• Ensure that all EHS related projects are completed on time and within budget.
• Demonstrate agility and versatility as an EHS professional and be able to adjust and manage various programs such as process safety, contractor safety, pressure safety, LOTO, machine safety and high-risk programs.
Education & experience:
• Minimum of 8 years’ combined experience managing environmental and safety programs to assure compliance with government regulations and company policies.
• Bachelor’s Degree (EHS related, Engineering, Technical Field) and Master’s Degree (EHS related, Engineering). EHS related experience in a highly regulated sector.
• Prior experience in other pharmaceutical functions such as operations, quality, maintenance, or engineering is a plus.
• Work experience in implementing EHS regulations and EHS Management systems (ISO certification), conducting incident investigations, EHS metrics, interacting with regulatory agencies and external organizations and managing cross functional teams.
• Development of practical, applicable standards and/or policies that meet business objectives. Technical expertise in the EHS functions as well as technical writing and business communications.
• Position requires knowledge on local and EPA regulations. Understanding of general industry safety and health standards (NIOSH) is required.
• Leadership and problem Solving: Ability to actively listen, build and maintain effective working relationships with internal/ external colleagues and stakeholders, and resolve conflict.
• Ability to establish measurable project goals and implementation plans, balance conflicting work demands and develop action plans. Ability to manage projects with complex datasets and produce usable outputs.
• Ability to develop standards and/or policies that meet business objectives.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software systems.
• Well-developed skills in leadership, communication, program development and project management.
• Familiarization and experience with: business continuity plans, safety management systems, industrial hygiene, environmental regulations, and organizational/safety culture development.
