JOB REQUIREMENTS: GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Ensures that prompt andaccurate dispatching of the proper police, fire, and/or emergency unitsto locations requiring service by obtaining, processing and coordinatingemergency service requests through the operation of a two-wayradio-telephone system. Ensures that the general public is provided withprompt and accurate information to non-emergency inquiries and directsthe inquiries to the appropriate person or outside agency for additionalinformation. DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The position iseither full time or part time (60%) and is challenged by the need toconsistently receive, process and dispatch precise information in ademanding and stressful environment. The position operates with theestablished policies and procedures of the dispatch center and theJuneau County Sheriff Office. The Telecommunicator position is under theimmediate supervision of the Dispatch Administrator. When the DispatchAdministrator is unavailable, the Telecommunicator reports to the ShiftLieutenant or the Officer in charge of the shift. The Telecommunicatorposition receives, interprets, intercepts and processes all emergencypolice, fire and medical service request. The position is responsiblefor maintaining control over emergency services requests. This includeskeeping the caller on the line when appropriate to obtain additionalinformation. In addition, the position must prioritize the servicerequests based upon the nature of the requests. Upon receiving anemergency service request, the position dispatches the appropriate fieldunits(s) to respond. The Telecommunicator has significant contact withthe Sheriff, Dispatch Administrator, all department members, and thegeneral public. In addition, the position has frequent contact withother law enforcement agencies, fire and EMS. The effectiveness of theTelecommunicator can be measured by its precise and timely processing ofemergency and non-emergency requests by dispatching and coordinating ofappropriate field units. EXAMPLES OF WORK: When receiving multipleemergency services requests simultaneously, the Telecommunicatorestablishes them in priority and assigns personnel in order ofavailability according to Department procedure. The position alsoreceives telephone requests for non-emergency situations. TheTelecommunicator may also assist with the training of newTelecommunicators, as well as other departmental employees, as assigned.The Telecommunicator also monitors the alarm panel in the dispatchcenter and takes action within established operating procedureguidelines when an alarm is received. The position maintains an accuratecomputerized log through the departments CAD (Computer AidedDispatching) system. This is done for each call for service request forpolice, fire and/or EMS service. The position also enters, retrievesdata and queries data from the Department\'s in-house computer system,the State of Wisconsin T.I.M.E. system, and various forms of informationon the departmental CAD system. The position monitors other area LawEnforcement agencies radio frequencies. The position is also responsiblefor ensuring compliance with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)regulations for proper operation and use of radio transmitters. Theposition must also log equipment failures and ensures that the properperson(s) are contacted for timely repairs. The Telecommunicator mayalso be assigned miscellaneous job duties as determined or assigned bythe Sheriff and/or his/her designee. The Telecommunicators may be placedin a rotator status where there are fluctuations in work schedules andhours of duty. The position will also entail working holidays, weekendsand night-time hours. Telecommunicators are subject to call-out outsidetheir regularly scheduled shift.
