The U.S. Consumer Services and Enterprise Digital & Data Technology Team (USCS and EDD Tech) brings together foundational strategic technology capabilities in digital experience engineering (Mobile and Web), AI/ML, marketing technology, enterprise communications, travel and lifestyle, and automation, grounded in our data technology model that prioritizes data governance. It employs a ground-breaking focus with development responsibilities for customer-facing capabilities that deepen and expand digital engagement, as well as core technical capabilities that cut across business lines and customer segments.
Our team includes the US Consumer Services Cross Platform Delivery team, who is the strategic Technology capability responsible for planning and delivering technical products to market at scale, across platforms, delivery teams and external partners.
The Director, Strategic Technology Planning will help us to move faster by identifying, driving and owning USCS and EDD Tech operational initiatives that will accelerate our success. We wake up thinking how can we move from good to phenomenal; what systems, processes, tools or technology will drive our efficiency at scale? We consistently seek to improve and innovate. We lead engineering programs and liaise with partners across the organization to ensure we identify and execute opportunities for increased speed, effectiveness, and impact.
In This Role, You'll Get To
Be the 'go to' strategic thought leader for USCS and EDD Tech, working with stakeholders across Technology to drive programs such as (illustrative examples, actual projects may vary):
Operating Model between Product and Engineering teams
Location Strategy to optimize the Engineering team
Operational and Commercial Guidance with resource vendor partnerships
Lead efforts to progress key initiatives in the DDIM USCS and EDD Tech organization’s Technology Strategy (ie. Best-in-Class Experience)
Collaborate with key Engineering leaders and partner teams to drive critical improvement initiatives, defining clear goals and success criteria.
On Your First Day, We'll Expect You to Have
A proven track record in both strategic planning and execution, including experience with Technology organization operations
7 years leading large scale/business critical Technology strategy projects or Technology and management consulting projects
A passion for engineering and about building a strong Engineering culture at American Express
Ability to wear different hats and context-switch frequently and seamlessly
Willingness to 'think' strategically, while also being willing to 'act' pragmatically and get into the weeds if vital, including being hands on and coding where needed
Effectiveness in building relationships across the organization as you find creative solutions to high visibility questions
Proficiency building impactful relationships quickly, and ability to communicate at senior leadership levels (SVP, EVP and business presidents).
Ability to identify and balance trade-offs as you influence teams toward successful products
Ability to influence without direct authority and thrive in ambiguous situations
Strong bias for action and excellent problem solving skills
It's Great If You Also Have
Know-how to work with Engineering and Product teams, and solid experience with overall strategies, org structure & design
Passion for operations and demonstrated experience in operationalizing processes, systems, or practices at scale
Eagerness and ability to soar at strategic levels as well as dive deeply into details (rolling up your sleeves) in order to deliver concrete outcomes
Experience as a hands-on engineer; you will have developed and shipped production software
Outstanding track record with multi-functional partners
Experience or background in running both technical and business programs
Qualifications
Salary Range: $145,000.00 to $230,000.00 annually bonus equity (if applicable) benefits
