The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) is an independent nonprofit organization authorized by Congress in 2010. Its mission is to fund research that will provide patients, their caregivers and clinicians with the evidence-based information needed to make better-informed healthcare decisions. Position Summary
The Director drives the design and implementation of strategic initiatives & special projects across PCORI, ensuring alignment to strategic objectives as well as enhancing integration across teams. Serves as a thought-partner to senior leaders in the organization and facilitates conversations and issue explorations. Acts as the "Chief of Staff" for Operations, directing attention and resources to priority matters, ensuring effective leveraging of the Deputy Executive Director for Operations, and providing critical advice. Serves as a critical node of communication between the Deputy Executive Director and senior leaders and fosters cross-functional collaboration in all aspects of the work.
Duties and Responsibilities
Strategic Planning
Contribute to and support strategic planning at the organization, including leading PCORI's Commitment Planning strategy and implementation, along with other strategic conversations and issue explorations as identified.Provide counsel to the Deputy Executive Director for Operations and other senior leadership on current and alternate strategies for ongoing and emerging lines of work.Work closely with the Deputy Executive Director for Operations to manage the strategic planning process within Operations, including supporting and carrying out an implementation plan(s) to enable the organization to reach its strategic objectives. Engage leadership across PCORI as thought partners and strategic allies.Oversee development and management of systems and methods for measuring and regularly evaluating Operations' impact and progress against strategic objectives.
Partnerships & Engagement
Ensure organizational priorities, goals, and deadlines are met by facilitating information sharing and decision-making between business units and departments, as needed.Identify, build, and cultivate collaborative relationships and external partnerships.Represent the Deputy Executive Director for Operations and the broader Operations business unit in meetings, facilitating information sharing and efficient decision-making.Develop advisory relationships with colleagues, as well as other departmental leaders, "above and beyond" the case work issues.Foster a learning and growing culture, for individuals and the organization, in collaboration with the Deputy Executive Director for Operations.Plan and facilitate Operations staff meetings and communications to ensure effective information sharing and clarity in decision-making at all levels.
Project Management & Oversight
Translate organizational strategies into implementation plans and monitor for milestone achievement. Ensure project priorities are clear, communicated throughout the project, assigned to responsible staff, and tracked regularly. Ensure Deputy Executive Director of Operations is apprised of progress and engaged in removing obstacles.Ensure integration of work across departments and stakeholders in each project. Leverage efficiencies and identify themes where work across silos is demonstrated successfully or encounters challenges.
Board Engagement
Oversee the planning and development of relevant Board-level and committee materials and activities and enable collaboration across teams to support a seamless PCORI experience for Board-level leaders.
Operations & Administration for the Office of the Deputy Executive Director for Operations
Directly supervise staff, interns, and fellows within the Office of the Deputy Executive Director for Operations and, more broadly, oversee development plans for each team member, to include new-staff onboarding; career development; skill development; and a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion.Manage daily organization and operational activities for the Office of the Deputy Executive Director for Operations, such as development and oversight of department annual budget and expenses, procurement agreements, space allocation, and business continuity planning.

Required Skills
Strategic Planning & Project Management: Experience developing strategies and implementing complex projects with a high degree of independence within a creative, fast-paced, action-oriented, and collegial environment. S/he will bring strong emotional intelligence to the position.Communication: Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; good meeting planning and facilitation skills.
Required Experience
Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree in public policy, public administration, or other relevant field strongly preferred.Previous direct supervisory experience required, including experience overseeing performance management process for direct reports and providing career development advice and counsel.Sound understanding of business operations including, but not limited to finance, human resources, information technology, procurement, facilities management, and administrative services preferably in a non-profit setting.Microsoft Office Suite proficient (i.e., Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Word). Familiarity with SharePoint and business intelligence applications (i.e., DOMO, PowerBI) a plus.
