  GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Reporting to the UBMS Director, the Assistant Director is responsible for planning, coordinating, assessing, and supervising significant components of the Upward Bound Math & Science Programs. This includes overseeing academic programming for academic year workshops and the residential segment of the six-week summer academy. The Assistant Director also holds oversight responsibility for UBMS Residential Counselors and all academic support programs, including direct supervision of the Summer Instructor and Project-Based Learning facilitator.

  DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  Act as a liaison between the UBMS program and staff at Fitchburg and Leominster High Schools. Travel within the state to provide direct student services in schools around Fitchburg and Leominster.Assist in designing services tailored to meet project participants' specific achievement levels and ensure the attainment of annual objectives. Plan, implement and supervise the academic year and the summer residential programs (including but not limited to academic, STEM, and College Success workshops, and field trips.)Lead full-cycle recruitment by identifying, screening, and selecting eligible disadvantaged participants in need of academic support for successful post secondary pursuits.Manage the preparation and submission of required annual performance reports to the U.S. Department of Education.Advocate for students in college preparation, including searches, applications, and the financial aid process.Conduct advisement and counseling activities across academic and summer program components.Provide problem resolution by overcoming barriers, adhering to deadlines, and employing sound administrative and time management principles.Assist in managing operating policies and procedures, ensuring accurate and compliant record keeping of student files and databases.Monitor academic progress of 62 program participants throughout the year. Diagnose educational needs in order to develop and maintain an up-to-date College Education Plan (CEP) for each participant. Meet with participants monthly to assess progress and revise CEPs based on goal achievements or changes.Collaborate with target schools' guidance counselors to schedule participants in suitable courses for the six-week residential summer session.Work with parents/guardians to align with their child's postsecondary programming goals.Attend weekly staff meetings, reporting progress, and ensuring compliance with university and federal regulations.Help recruit, hire, train, and supervise residential counseling and tutoring staff. Directly supervise summer academic instructors and the project-based learning facilitator.Assist in formative and summative program evaluations, contributing to short- and long-term plans for UBMS grant success.Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Upward Bound Math and Science.

  Qualifications

  Bachelor's degree in mathematics, science, education, or a related field. Minimum of three years' experience in education, counseling, or a related program. 3-5 years' experience effectively working with diverse academic student populations. Proficiency in high school and college curricula, college admissions, financial aid, career exploration, curriculum development, and adolescent development. Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment, manage multiple projects, and adhere to guidelines. Independent and flexible work approach. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace for Education, database programs (e.g., Student Access), and social media platforms. Flexibility for extended summer hours, nights, and weekends. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required for advising students in Fitchburg and Leominster. Bilingual ability, program development, and experience with disadvantaged populations or similar programs (e.g., TRIO) are beneficial. Personal experience in overcoming barriers akin to those faced by project participants is beneficial. Successful completion of checks by the Criminal History Systems Board (CORI check), a SORI check and satisfactory background checks according to university standards. Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations.
