As the Director of Legal Practices and Communications , you will develop and implement knowledge management, training, and communications strategies for the Charles Schwab Legal Services department. The high-level mandate for this role includes:
Developing a top-of-industry knowledge management framework to improve the delivery of legal services.
Preparing reporting and communications to stakeholders throughout Schwab, including for the General Counsel, Executive Council, Board of Directors, members of the Legal Services department, and stakeholders across the firm.
Creating training and development programs, content, and materials for both the Legal Services department as well as for our internal clients.
In this role, you will report directly to the Head of Legal Operations and Strategic Initiatives and will serve as a member of the Legal Operations leadership team. We look forward to meeting you!
What You Will Do:
Intake and Legal Knowledge Management. Collaborating with others, help to develop, implement, and maintain a strategic intake and knowledge management plan for the Charles Schwab Legal department.
This includes processes, procedures, and best practices for storage of work product, including standards for retention, curation, and update.
Serve as a liaison and coordinator for knowledge management projects originating within the practice groups, helping to ensure that projects are completed on time, within budget, and to a high level of quality.
Create Self-Help Resources. Help to create and publish a knowledge repository of templates, forms, briefs, law firm memorandums, and other work product that will enable attorneys to work as efficiently as possible, and to help them avoid situations where they are “re-inventing the wheel.”
This includes, but is not limited to, developing self-help and reference resources, training, and knowledge management, or other tools, that increase the Legal department’s collaboration (both internally and with external parties), scalability, and efficiency.
Communications. Develop and draft communications, reporting, processes, and procedures in support of the department’s strategic plan and functioning as an enterprise business unit.
Support the drafting and delivery of thought leadership publications and other client-facing knowledge by other members of the Legal Department through developing ideas for articles and contributing to them on an as-needed basis.
Create and advise on a central style standard so that internal communications and reports have a consistent voice, look, and feel.
Reference Work. Take the lead identifying, analyzing, and enhancing the attorney work product of the Legal department, including the collation and organization of standard forms; precedent libraries; templates; guidance materials and checklists; current awareness and legal updates; presentations; and other knowledge assets.
Training. Build out a training and development program for members of the in-house department, as well as our internal clients, on legal topics relevant to Charles Schwab.
Change Management. Serve as a champion and change agent to constantly improve knowledge management, training, and the delivery of legal services.

What you have
To ensure that we fulfill our promise of “challenging the status quo,” this role has specific qualifications that successful candidates should have:
Required Qualifications:
10+ years of experience in a Corporate legal or law firm environment with deep expertise in knowledge management concepts, solutions, and services. Advanced degree (JD, MBA, Master of Library Sciences) strongly preferred.
Experienced in developing strategic or departmental planning materials that require consensus gathering from multiple constituents.
Exceptional communicator (both in writing and through oral presentations) with a strong ability to interact with all levels of employees; to communicate complex concepts simply, clearly, and effectively; and to coordinate and liaise with multiple departments using strong project management skills.
Expert user of PowerPoint, Tableau, and various style guides (The Chicago Manual of Style, AP Style, The Blue Book and California Style Manual).
Demonstrated ability to publish clear and compelling content on a regular/frequent cadence.
A team player who works hard and treats colleagues with respect and appreciation.
