Job Description Summary
The Director, Major Gifts and Planned Giving is responsible for the leadership and strategic direction for the University’s Major Gifts and Planned Giving programs. Reporting to and working in close collaboration with the Associate Vice President for Development, the Director will create and implement the plans and strategy for the Major Gifts and Planned Giving programs. The Director will serve as the chief major gifts officer with responsibility to mentor and coach members of the Majors Gift team.
Essential Functions
Create and implement the plans and strategy for the Major Gifts program to meet annual institutional goals. (15%)
Create and implement the plans and strategy for the Planned Giving program and work with the development team to successfully meet institutional goals. This includes print communications, on-line communications, individual meetings and events – all with targeted, segmented audiences. (15%)
Responsible for the design and implementation of major gift cultivation and solicitation strategies for a portfolio of 80 prospects. Along with the Associate Vice President for Development, serve as primary staff for the President’s and Vice President’s portfolio management. (30%)
Direct and supervise the major gifts team including: * Establishing performance goals and annual performance metrics * Work with gift officers in the qualification of new prospects * Assist gift officers with cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies to develop and maintain key, long-term relationships with donors and prospects (20%)
Work closely with the Vice President and President to create opportunities for leadership engagement with prospects. (20%)
Required Education, Experience, Technology Applications and Skills
Bachelor’s Degree
At least five years of progressively responsible major gift and/or planned giving experience, preferably in a higher education setting.
Demonstrate strong leadership skills to manage a team of gift officers.
Excellent interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills.
Ability to think strategically and creatively
Exceptional organizational skills and be able to attend to and prioritize projects.
Ability to successfully manage interpersonal working relationships. As appropriate, collaborate with staff in other units and divisions to achieve the goals of the University.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Handles confidential information sensitively and appropriately.
