  POSITION PURPOSE

  This position leads the Graduate School’s Graduate Enrollment Management Services (GEMS) unit and is responsible for a portfolio of duties encompassing all aspects of graduate student admissions, degree progression, graduate initiatives, and policy and strategy development for the three University of Washington (UW) campuses. The Director for Graduate Enrollment Management has a broad and deep impact on academic operations at the University and on the graduate student experience. The director provides strategic leadership for a team which services and supports graduate applicants, graduate students, faculty and staff, and academic and administrative units.

  The director is responsible for a comprehensive range of process and policy leadership duties that focus on increasing the university's capacity for meeting next generation challenges and leveraging opportunities to create innovations in graduate education. This position engages with University stakeholders across institutional hierarchies, including university leadership, administration, faculty, staff, and students, and must have the ability to navigate complex political landscapes while maintaining a high degree of diplomacy, composure, and professionalism. Building and managing relationships with central university leadership, unit leaders, and other stakeholders is a critical function of the role. These efforts include consistent engagement with the Graduate Council of elected faculty and leadership of faculty committees and working groups within the Council.

  The director supports and develops processes and policies that advance equity, inclusion, and justice in graduate education. In partnership with other units in the Graduate School, the director addresses issues pertaining to race and equity and advances the priority of ameliorating disparities in graduate education, working to create and promote a more mutual, respectful, inclusive, and diverse place of learning and excellence. In the execution of this work, the director is expected to possess the skills to design, develop, implement, and assess innovative practices to support institution-wide priorities and to drive organizational change within the Graduate School.

  Additional core responsibilities include oversight of student advising services, managing key administrative operations, and overseeing essential technology systems for active degree programs. The director provides technology-based analysis of graduate program admissions business practices, processes, and problems for over 400 degree and certificate programs and must possess thorough knowledge of the Slate system, as well as the policies, procedures, and laws that support graduate education on the 3 UW campuses. It requires expertise in graduate admissions and the functionality of Slate. The director also oversees enrollment management processes in MyGrad. This position will lead cross-functional teams to solve complex business or systems issues within the Graduate School and across all graduate programs and must be equally comfortable working with information technology staff, end users, and stakeholders. The successful candidate offers vision, leverages data and technology, and has deep knowledge of graduate admissions, degree management, and business acumen.

  Reporting to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the Director serves as a member of the Graduate School Executive Staff team and represents the interests of the Graduate School and graduate programs on UW committees across the three UW campuses. This position must understand and represent the diverse needs of graduate programs and be able to lead multi-faceted initiatives by engaging a diverse range of stakeholders.

  DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Operations – 40%

  Direct staff in work related to student admissions, policy, advising, academic progress, degree requirements, and graduation administration.

  Oversee the SLATE graduate admissions platform and MyGrad enrollment platform, and the analysis of admissions and enrollment business practices, processes, and problems.

  Partner with the Graduate School’s Computing and Information Resources (CAIR) to find and harness technological solutions to complex problems.

  Ensure compliance with state, federal, and UW policies, processes, and regulations.Strategy and Initiatives – 20%

  Develop and lead internal and cross-campus initiatives efforts affecting the UW graduate community and the student experience.

  Use current awareness of issues impacting graduate education and the graduate student experience to inform strategy development for the unit.

  Identify needs, cultivate opportunities, and provide leadership to create efficiencies and implement evidence-based initiatives in enrollment management and/or broader processes in GEMS and the partnership between GEMS and Academic Affairs.

  Create and oversee reports that inform key University decision makers and stakeholders on trends in graduate enrollment management.Policy Development and Interpretation – 20%

  Participate in the development and implementation of policy, processes, and resources that support the Graduate School's strategic plan; provide counsel to the Dean and Associate Dean.

  Interpret Graduate School policies and apply them to complex student situations.Campus Leadership and Engagement – 20%

  Serve as the Graduate School liaison on university-wide committees and meetings, including tuition appeals, suspension of admissions, degree codes, curricular changes, and student data.

  Lead and coordinate internal and cross-campus process improvement efforts affecting the UW graduate community (e.g., enrollment confirmation deposits, automated degree audits, etc.).

  Serve as a data-domain sub-steward representing graduate admissions/student data on the Academic Data Domain Council.

  Serve as the business owner for Slate and MyGrad, leading efforts in guidance to the university community and evaluating requested changes.

  Collaborate with Computing and Information Resources (CAIR) on technological implementations, process redesign, and system enhancements. Supervisory Responsibilities This position directly supervises two professional staff positions, who in turn supervise an additional 6 staff positions. For direct reports, this position holds responsibility for hiring, training, evaluating, and managing work. This position is responsible for the team's overall performance. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  Bachelor’s degree in education, policy, or a related field.

  Seven years of experience in higher education administration and operations.

  Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  Understanding of institutional structures and policies in higher education.

  Proven management skills in organizing and overseeing staff and processes to support and redesign effective procedures.

  Demonstrated success in project management and building productive relationships with a variety of stakeholders.

  Ability to negotiate complex institutional systems with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both oral and written.

  Experience working with enterprise admissions and enrollment management software applications.

  Ability to achieve results in a deadline-driven environment where multiple projects and responsibilities compete for time and attention.TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

  Must be adept at using institutional data to drive business decisions.

  Must be adept at Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook calendar, MS Word, and MS Excel. DESIRED QUALFICATIONS

  Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies related to student records, information systems, admissions, and registration.

  Three to five years’ experience working with student information systems and/or admissions systems.

  Experience working in a multi-campus university system or experience in a variety of higher education institutions (e.g., R1, regional, master’s).

  Experience communicating with international populations in an educational setting.

  Advanced presentation and leadership skills. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT This is a hybrid position requiring at least 2 days of onsite work a week at the Seattle UW campus during regular business hours. May work extended or non-standard hours based on project or business needs. Occasional local and overnight travel required.
