About the Role
Location: Basel or London
This role leads and collaborates with the internal community of Environment, Social, Governance (ESG) experts to develop and drive key initiatives to support the strategy to position Novartis as a trusted leader in the pharmaceutical sector. The position is highly strategic and requires experience and concrete achievements in environmental sustainability work. This is a unique opportunity to shape Novartis' Sustainability strategy and work with senior leaders across the organization to drive long-term impact.
Your responsibilities include, but not limited to:
• Drive the evolution of Novartis' Environmental Sustainability strategy and roadmap - including carbon, water, waste/circularity, and nature/biodiversity.
• Identify opportunities to accelerate progress on Novartis' ambitious environmental sustainability targets (incl. net zero by 2040); drive continuous improvement by providing expert guidance across different business functions (incl. Operations, Development, Commercial).
• Support the Head Strategy, Sustainability & ESG in defining and driving key initiatives; support strategic "bold moves" in Environmental Sustainability & ESG for Novartis Group, the CEO, the Novartis ESG Committee (Executive-level decision body) and ESG Leaders Forum (the Executive-1 group of leaders for Sustainability and ESG).
• Independently drive and coordinate high profile, company-wide strategic initiatives for Environmental Sustainability.
• Be on the forefront of knowledge in the sustainability and ESG space in the industry; keep abreast of evolving environmental regulations, standards and industry trends; develop scanning and analytics capability to provide analysis on trends and expectations in the external environment; generate strategic insights based on best-in-class analysis, distill outputs and recommendations which enable informed decisions of top-level leaders.
• Participate in industry groups, represent Novartis in external discussions, and shape standards for our industry (e.g., Pharmaceutical Environment Group, WBCSD).
• Serve as Secretariat for the "Environmental Sustainability Strategy Leadership Team", the group of leaders for Novartis' Environmental Sustainability Strategy.
• Develop annual strategy update on Environmental Sustainability, as part of the annual corporate strategy process to Executive Management and Board.

Role Requirements
• Degree in Business, Engineering, Sustainability or Life Sciences; MD, PhD or MBA preferred or equivalent on-the-job experience.
• Strong expert knowledge of Environmental Sustainability topics and practices (carbon, water, waste/circularity, nature/biodiversity), including key trends, standards and frameworks (incl. science-based targets).
• Proven track record of concrete achievements in environmental sustainability projects and strategy work, driving and influencing corporates' environmental sustainability agenda. Demonstratable work experience and relevant experience gained in environmental sustainability.
• Extensive project and program management experience in strategic projects; management consulting background preferred (equal to engagement manager or associate principal level) or other relevant extensive work experience.
• Ability to develop and manage projects with high quality, interact with senior management and lead cross-functional project teams (internal stakeholders and external providers)
• Ability to develop presentations for senior leaders (incl. Executive & Board level), communicate and present clearly and make strategic recommendations.
• Ability to navigate a complex matrix environment and to work at all levels of the organization, including executive management.
• Strong experience in analyzing data.
• High proficiency in English - both written and oral.
Desirable skills:
• Previous experience in the pharmaceutical industry (industry knowledge).
