Job Description:
The Wall Street Journal is looking for a Deputy Photo Director to join the senior leadership team of the Photo department. The Deputy will work with the Photo Director and three other deputies to oversee the work of our Photo team.
WSJ is the definitive source of news seen through the lens of business and economics. This positionwill have a team of photo editor reports, covering a wide range of photographic assigning, research and production in a range of separate coverage areas incorporating News and Business in particular. These content areas combine the need for a bold digital display on mobile and desktop platforms, and a thoughtful approach to print requirements. The Deputy will be responsible for maintaining a strong and dynamic quality of photography (may include photo-illustration) and will facilitate innovative visual approaches to the creation and surfacing of our content. The Deputy will attend weekly bureau and art meetings and will be working closely with their team of editors, coverage chiefs, publishing and print editors, platform leads, section art directors, graphics, video and audience colleagues on daily and enterprise coverage.
The role will include advising and iterating on workflow for the team, as well as the training and mentoring of photo editors and overseeing the budgets managed by the individual editors. The Deputy will also collaborate with the Director, fellow Deputies and the Lead Photo Editors of the department, on breaking news coverage and events, as well as cross-coverage area initiatives and projects.
This position will be based in New York and will report to the Director of Photography.
You will:
-Maintain a very high quality of photographic assigning, execution and research.
-Manage a team of photo editors, providing constructive feedback on projects and professional growth.
-Lead the team in the production of innovative online visual story builds for photography and multimedia, collaborating with graphics and visual editors, art directors and developer colleagues.
-Recruit and promote a diverse and exciting group of photographers and subjects with an eye to both existing and new audiences.
-Demonstrate a clear understanding of the ethics and standards of our journalism and photography, working with your reports on questions of ethics, copyright and legal vetting.
-Prove strong organizational and communication skills and an ability to balance short and long term projects across several different sections.
-Manage the distributed budget of the team effectively with quarterly check-ins.
-Keep stakeholders apprised of all projects by maintaining departmental project lists and attending relevant meetings to ensure all milestones and editorial requirements are met.
-Work with platform leads on planning and platform scheduling and strategy as well as digital builds and projects.
-Help direct and create new workflows and processes in a fast-paced, global, and networked newsroom.
-Recommend and lead change where required to strengthen the team and the journalism.
-Work closely with the Photography Director on broader departmental and organizational projects.
You have:
-At least five years of experience leading a team of visual journalists and collaborating closely with text journalists and editors in a newsroom, or other editorial setting.
-Demonstrates excellent news judgment, along with design interest and an expansive understanding of the mobile-first experience.
-Experience with people and performance management, or equivalent experience.
-Experience working in a highly collaborative environment.
Excellent organizational and communication skills.
-A creative vision and drive to share and collaborate on new ideas.
-Experience building consensus and motivating different personalities and teams.
-Experience managing change, creating new processes and workflows.
-The ability to work in different CMS and digital tools - and the initiative to take on and learn new tasks in a fast-moving environment.
-Some knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript useful.
-Ability to work quickly and efficiently under tight deadlines.
-Enthusiasm to train reporters and editors to learn new skills that will contribute to their visual storytelling.

Pay Range: $65,000 - $200,000
