The Hospital Dental Services (HDS) dental assistant functions under the direct supervision of the faculty provider, providing assistance for the faculty provider, dental students, and residents in all areas of the hospital dental department. Hospital Dental Services has three defined programs, pediatrics, adult dentistry, and oral surgery. Hospital Dental Services (HDS) provides care for medically fragile and special needs patients. Dental Assistants in the department assist in both the clinic and the operating room. To provide clinical assistance for dental procedures and dental surgery under the supervision of licensed dentists and Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons, as well as chairside assistance to GPR, pediatric dentistry OMS residents and interns. This includes direct and critical patient care as described and certified by the Oregon Board of Dentistry. Along with the requirement to perform dental assisting while patients are under general anesthesia in an operating room and to monitor sedated patients for vital signs in the dental office. SURGICAL ASSISTANCE: Chairside assistance and support to dentists, surgeons, residents, interns and students. Includes; tissue retraction, suctioning, disinfection of treatment rooms and surgical suites, tray set up and breakdown and instrument sterilization and exposure of radiographs. Communicates post-operative instructions to the patient. Is responsible for the disinfection of treatment rooms and surgical suites, the set-up of surgical trays, the set-up and removal of biohazards and sharps, surgical aspirating equipment, nitrous-oxide, IV sedation and general anesthesia equipment and implant set-ups. CLINICAL OPERATIONS: Organizes workday according to the patient schedule, seats and dismisses patients. Takes and records vitals, performs radiology services for our Dept. and the requests of other OHSU depts., Provides patient post-op instructions and take-home supplies. Appropriately wipes down and processes surgical instruments for delivery to the Sterile Processing Department for sterilization. Takes impressions and pours models. MAINTAINANCE & INVENTORY: Provides for/seeks out the maintenance of equipment and instruments. Manage and maintains the inventory of all supplies. Cleans and organizes the clinical area and restocks supplies as necessary. Maintains drug, controlled substance inventory, and code cart. Maintains the inventory of implants systems. Performs requirements of staff members as outlined in Compliance Roles & Responsibilities in OHSU Hospitals and Clinics. Performs job in compliance with state and national regulations (i.e. OSHA & HIPAA). Performs job duties as an integral member of our healthcare team. Other clinical operations related tasks may be assigned.

Additional Skills & Qualifications:
Completion of an approved Dental Assistant Training program. Certification by the Oregon State Board Dentistry for Radiological Proficiency (DANB). BLS Cert (Basic Life Support) - MUST be through the AHA (American Heart Association). 1+ year(s) experience as a chairside Dental Assistant - must have worked as a dental assistant within the last 5 years. Proven reliability and attendance.
